إِذاif شِئتَyou wish أَنto تَسمَعَhear حَنيناًa yearning cry كَأَنَّهُas though it were
حَنينُthe yearning cry المَطاياthe riding camels فيin البِلادِthe lands البلاقعِbarren
If you wish to hear a yearning cry as though it were
If you wish to hear a yearning as though it were
the cry of riding camels in barren lands,
The yearning of the riding camels in the resounding desert,
وَنوحاًand a lament كَأَنَّas though الطائِراتِthe birds تَنوحهُlament it
بِأَنفاسِwith the breaths of مَحزونٍa grieving person وَأَنَّةِand the moan of ساجِعِa cooing bird
and a lament as though the birds were lamenting it
And a wailing as though birds wailed it
with a grieving person's breaths and a cooing bird's moan,
With sorrowful breaths and moaning of one who tosses in bed,
فَكُنthen be مُنشِدَthe reciter of البَيتِthe verse الَّذيwhich نَشدَانهُits recitation
أَلَذُّmore delightful وَأَحلىand sweeter فيin خُروقِthe openings of المَسامِعِthe ears
then recite the verse whose recitation
Then become the reciter of the verse which we recited -
is more delightful and sweeter in the openings of the ears:
The sweetest and most delicious to pierced ears,
وَكَيفَand how تَرىyou see لَيلىLayla بِعَينٍwith an eye تَرىyou see بِهاthrough it
سِواهاsomeone other than her وَماand not طَهَّرتهاyou have purified it بِالمَدامِعِwith tears
And how can you see Layla with an eye through which you see
And how do you see Layla with an eye that sees with it
someone other than her, when you have not purified it with tears?
Other than her and has not purified it with tears?
