رُمِيwas struck بِاللَواحِظِby glances عَنfrom حاجِبٍan eyebrow
رُمِي بِاللَواحِظِ عَن حاجِبٍ
فَلاso neither السَيفُthe sword ماضيkeen-edged وَلاnor اللَيثُthe lion ضاريfierce
فَلا السَيفُ ماضي وَلا اللَيثُ ضاري
He was struck by glances loosed from an eyebrow;
So the sword is not keen, nor the lion fierce.
وَخَطَّand traced عَلىupon الخَدِّthe cheek لامُthe letter lām العِذارِthe cheek-down
وَخَطَّ عَلى الخَدِّ لامُ العِذارِ
فَماso how أَحسَنَlovely الآسُthe myrtle فيamid الجُلَّنارِthe pomegranate blossom
فَما أَحسَنَ الآسُ في الجُلَّنارِ
And the cheek-down’s lām traced a line upon the cheek—
So how lovely the myrtle amid the pomegranate blossom!
