كَلَّمتُهُI spoke to him فَاصفَرَّso he turned yellow مِنfrom خَجَلٍshyness
حَتَّىuntil اكتَسَىbecame clothed بِالعَسجَدِin gold الوَرِقُthe silver
I spoke to him, and he turned yellow with shyness,
Until silver was clothed in gold.
وَسَألتُهُand I asked him تَقبِيلَto kiss رَاحَتِهِhis palm
فَأبَىbut he refused وقَالَand he said أخَافُI fear أحتَرِقُI shall burn
And I asked him to let me kiss his palm,
But he refused and said, "I fear I shall burn."
حتَّىeven زَفِيرِيmy sighing عَاقَhindered عِنfrom أمَلِيmy hope
إِنَّindeed الشَّقِيَّthe unfortunate man بِرِيقِهِon his saliva شَرِقُchokes
Even my sighing kept me from my hope;
Indeed, the unfortunate man chokes on his own saliva.
