Leave behind, as you travel by night toward the inviolable precinct,

sweet sleep, and for its sake shun every bed.

And offer, when you come to the finest dwelling,

the greeting of one wasted by love, wandering-hearted and wounded,

swift and obedient to the caller of passionate longing.

He acts by love's decrees and upholds them.

For how many a night have its cares assailed him,

and he kept them company until its stars departed.

He keeps company with a thought of the one he loves,

and his eye looks ever eagerly toward reunion.

    وكمْ عاذَ مِنهُ من مواقف فِتنة

    And how often in his changing circumstances has he tasted affliction;

    and how often has he sought refuge from it—from scenes of temptation;

and how many a groan he utters after another,

betraying a secret he keeps beneath veils,

and telling of a heart of his torn apart.

Longing that never leaves him has announced his patience's death,

and love that refuses to obey the reproachers,

and an eyelid that, as you see, is never found asleep,

and a mind that dwells forever in love's intoxication,

and has sworn never to sober or regain awareness.

He remained love-enslaved despite the distance of the place he sought,

and lightning smiling in the Hijaz made him weep.

And the sight of the protected precinct made him yearn for his loved ones.

They summoned him to a matter before which blood drips.

So alas for the lover's soul, for what he has been summoned to!

At mention of the bend, his tears pour forth,

and between hope and fear his stance offers a lesson.

At times bliss visits him with a glance,

and at times you see a fire of anguish in his heart.

Death comes to him from every quarter.

Farewell to life's serenity and sweetness,

if my eye does not win a meeting with its beloved,

and does not gain its share of his attention,

and my pouring tears do not move him to tenderness,

and my complaint makes no impression on him.

O you who consign my eye to tormenting sleeplessness,

and make my tears flow like pouring rain,

and kindle a searing passion in my heart:

before your eyes are what my heart endures and has endured,

and with you lies what my ribs contain and conceal.

    يعالجُ دَاءً بَيْنَ جنبيهمُعْضلا

    Affliction has harmed me, and whoever loves is afflicted;

he wrestles with an intractable malady between his sides,

and what he has borne of his passion weighs upon him,

and complaint impels him, so he longs for a dwelling

where he finds the repose of one at peace:

the abode of the one who, through his law, guided mankind

to the root of God's religion and its branch, in truth.

Through him religion's unity was restored after its rending.

    نُقيمُ بِهِ رَسْمَ البُكَا والتَّضَرع

    We follow the lovers' way in seeking his dwelling;

there we observe the rite of weeping and supplication.

Lights dwell there, filling its spacious courts,

and the repository of secrets is with his companions.

Hope at his door is guidance for the bewildered,

and whoever chooses to seek his precinct is honored

by kissing the face of the fragrant earth.

He established for us the law of guidance and its beacon,

and clothed us in piety's robe and its inner garment,

and spared us blindness's crookedness and stumbling.

May God water the Hashimite's days and dwelling

with a cloud of divine favor that never ceases.

He rebuilt monotheism's glory after its demolition,

and imposed humiliation on the polytheists through his earnest striving.

Mighty is he: the Lord of heaven decreed his good fortune,

and strengthened him with His host at the encounter,

so He brought him to victory's sweetest watering-place.

I say to a caravan journeying to Yathrib:

    فَبُثوا إِلَيْهِ كُلَّ شَكْوَى ومتعب

    You have won nearness to the Prophet, himself brought near;

so pour out to him every complaint and hardship,

and recount to him every wish and request.

For you are within the Messenger's sight and hearing.

You will be protected in his dwelling with the finest protection,

    and be amply shielded from whatever you fear;

and every sign of his glory will appear to you.

So dwell at the furthest limit of veneration,

for the right of God's Messenger is the most binding duty to observe.

Indeed, by Him who granted him firmly rooted glory,

he was a refuge and a stronghold for seekers of bounty,

sheltering them beneath a trailing veil of forbearance,

and showering them with pouring rain from his generosity,

and pursuing every avenue in bestowing honor.

We have wearied of a life with no sweetness in its coming,

and of suffering whose tread there is heavy and harsh.

So we went to the master of generosity and its chief,

and when we sought him, we trusted in his bounty,

and feared no menace from the calamity to come.

Muhammad's coming has indeed ennobled the world,

and shed upon it the lights of truth made strong.

Through him his heirs adorn every gathering,

some guiding mankind, others themselves guided,

and some planting a root in guidance, others putting forth branches.

Peace be upon the one whose station God has ennobled,

the greeting of a lover who has kept his secret alive through time.

He has a wish, and wishing for it has consumed his life,

and needs of the soul that never pass beyond his breast.

For these he has readied the influence of the intercessor whose intercession is accepted.
