جِلَّقُJilliq جَنَّةُparadise مَنwhoever تاهَstrutted وباهَىand boasted
ورُباهاand her hills مُنْيَتِيmy heart’s desire لولاwere it not for وَبَاهاher plague
Jilliq is a paradise for those who strut and boast.
The homeland of the lost and confused is illusion
And her hills are my heart’s desire, were it not for her plague.
And my demise was nearly brought by its illusion
قيلit was said ليto me صِفْdescribe بَرَدَىBarada كوثَرهاher Kawthar, the river of Paradise
قُلْتُI said غالٍcostly بَرَدَاهاher Barada بِرَدَاهَاwith its deadly peril
I was told: “Describe Barada, her Kawthar.”
I was told describe its abundant cold water
I said: “Her Barada comes dear, with its deadly peril.”
I said its cold water is as cold as it is
وَطَنيmy homeland مِصْرٌEgypt وفيهاand in her وَطَريmy desire
ولِعَيْنِيand for my eye مُشْتَهَاهاher delights مُشْتَهَاهَاits desire
My homeland is Egypt, and in her lies my desire.
My homeland is Egypt where lies my passion
And her delights are what my eye desires.
And for my eyes what it desires is its desire
ولِنَفْسِيand for my soul غيرَهاother than her إنif سَكِنَتْit settles
ياO خَلِيلَيَّmy two friends سلاَهاask it, you two ماwhat سلاهاits solace
And if my soul should settle anywhere but in her,
And for myself, if it's other than her, even if peaceful
My two friends, ask it what solace it has found.
Oh my friend, its peace is not its peace
