تصحيفَهُ في الخَطّ مَقلوبَهْ
What name, if you search through my poetry, will you find
What name, if you search my verse, will you find
whose repointed form in writing is its reversal?
redotted in writing as its reversed form?
وهْوَand it إذاif صَحَّفْتَyou redotted ثانيهits second letter مِنْamong
وهْوَ إذا صَحَّفْتَ ثانيه مِنْ
أنواعِkinds طَيرٍof birds غيرِnot محْبوبَهْbeloved
أنواعِ طَيرٍ غيرِ محْبوبَهْ
And if you repoint its second letter, it becomes one
And if you redot its second letter, it belongs among
kind of bird—other than its beloved.

ونَقْطُand the dots حَرْفٍof a letter فيهin it إنْif زالَvanish مَعْtogether with
ونَقْطُ حَرْفٍ فيه إنْ زالَ مَعْ
ألْفٍan alif بِهin it بِيعَwas sold بِخرّوبَهْfor a kharrūba (a small coin)
ألْفٍ بِه بِيعَ بِخرّوبَهْ
If the dot of a letter in it vanishes together with

وقَلْبُهُ قَلْبٌ لِمَا فَهْمُهُ
مِنfrom بَعْدِafter لامٍa lām كُلُّall أُعجوبَهْa marvel
مِن بَعْدِ لامٍ كُلُّ أُعجوبَهْ
Its reversal is the heart of that whose meaning,
And its reversal is the reverse of something whose interpretation
when it follows a lām, is “every marvel.”

حاشِيَتاهُits two outer letters عُوذَةٌa protective charm بَعْدَماafter
حاشِيَتاهُ عُوذَةٌ بَعْدَما
صُفّحَتَاwere both redotted (probable intended reading) فيin الذّكْرِthe Remembrance مطلوبَهsought
صُفّحَتَا في الذّكْرِ مطلوبَه
Its two outer letters form a protective invocation once

والدّالُ جيماً فيِه مَحْسوبَه
And if you take the jīm in it for its dāl,

and count the dāl in it as a jīm,
and the dāl in it is reckoned as jīm,
مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter حَرْفَيْنِtwo letters بِهin it صُحّفاwere both redotted
مِنْ بَعْدِ حَرْفَيْنِ بِه صُحّفا
والزّايُand the zāy واوٌa wāw فيِهin it مكْتوبَهwritten
والزّايُ واوٌ فيِه مكْتوبَه
after two letters in it have been repointed,
after two letters in it have been redotted,
and write the zāy in it as a wāw,
and its zāy is written as wāw,
صارَbecame اسمَthe name مَنْof one whom شَرَّفَهُhonored him اللهُGod بالthrough the
صارَ اسمَ مَنْ شَرَّفَهُ اللهُ بال
وَحْيِrevelation كماjust as شَرَّفَHe honored مصحوبَهhis companion
وَحْيِ كما شَرَّفَ مصحوبَه
it becomes the name of one whom God ennobled through
it becomes the name of one whom God honored through
revelation, as He ennobled His Beloved.
