Was it Layla's fire that appeared by night at Dhu Salam,

Or lightning that flashed over al-Zawra, then al-Alam?

O breezes of Na'man, why not a breath before dawn?

And water of Wajra, why not a draught for my mouth?

O caravan-driver, folding up the wastes on a trackless course,

As a scroll is rolled, at Dhat al-Shih in Idam,

Turn aside to the protected pasture—may God preserve you—making for

The wild-lote thicket, with its laurels and palm-like khuzum trees.

Stop at Sal', and ask at al-Jiz' whether rain has fallen

In a steady downpour on the little tamarisks at al-Raqmatayn.

I adjure you by God: if you cross al-Aqiq in the forenoon,

Then convey greetings to them without reserve.

And say: “I left a man stricken in your dwellings,

Alive as a dead man, lending sickness to sickness itself.”

For from my heart a blaze has taken a firebrand's place,

And from my eyelids tears have poured like steady rains.

Such is the lovers' way: they never love

A fawn without pain afflicting every limb.

O you who foolishly reproach me for loving them,

Cease your reproach, for had you loved, you would not blame.

By the sanctity of union and age-old love, and by the

Firm covenant and all that once was in ancient days,

    ليسَ التبدُّلُ والسُّلوانُ من شِيَمي

    I have not turned from them through forgetting or for another;

Fickleness and forgetting are not in my nature.

Restore sleep to my eyelids; perhaps your phantom

Will visit my bed in the oblivion of dreaming.

Ah, for our days at al-Khayf—if only they had lasted

Ten days! And alas for them—why did they not endure?

Too late! Ah, my sorrow—if only it could help me,

Or my cry of regret avail for what is gone!

    عهِدْتُ طَرْفِيَ لم يَنْظرْ لغَيْرِهم

    Kindly keep away from me, gazelles of al-Munhana;

I have known my gaze to look on none but them,

In willing obedience to a judge whose ruling was astonishing:

He decreed that my blood be shed outside the sanctuary and within.

Deaf, he heard no complaint; mute, he did not

Return an answer, and was blind to the yearning lover's plight.
