أناI القَتِيلُthe slain one بلاwithout إثمٍsin ولاnor حَرَجِblame
Amid the battle of eyes and souls,
Between the battlefields of glances and passions
I am the slain one, without sin or blame.
I am the slain, no sin or shame to my name
ودّعتُI bade farewell قبلbefore الهوىlove روحيmy soul لماwhen نَظَرْتَlooked

I bade my soul farewell before love, when they beheld—
I bid farewell to my soul when your eyes I first met
my eyes—the beauty of that delightful sight.
At the sight of that beautiful vision's radiant light
للَّهِto God (in admiration) أجفانُthe eyelids of عَينٍan eye فيكَfor you ساهِرةٍwakeful

God bless the lids of an eye kept wakeful for you,
By God, my eyelids are sleepless for you
in longing for you, and a heart sore with passion;
Yearning, loving, my heart is torn in two

and ribs grown thin, all but straightened
My ribs so weakened, bent from the fire
from their curves by my liver, burning with love's anguish;
Of my liver, scorched with passionate desire

Tears rain down, if not for breath's gentle tide
love's fire, I could scarcely have escaped the surging depths.
From fires of love I'd not have survived

And welcome the ailments for your sake, through which you hid
You blamed fabricated ailments, excuses to hide
from me; through them my pleas before love are upheld.
From my sight, while desire you deride

For you I met the morning as I met the evening, sorrowful,
I woke feeling dejected, I slept the same way
nor did I cry impatiently, 'O distress, be relieved!'
But never in sorrow or despair did I stray

I yearn for every heart that has in passion
To each loving heart, love is their life's work
an occupation, and every tongue continually speaking of love;
Each tongue speaks love, each soul love does irk

and every ear that is deaf to the reproacher,
Each deaf ear ignores the lover's sweet words
and every eyelid that has not turned toward slumber.
Each sleeping eyelid from wakefulness blurred
لاmay there not كانَbe وَجْدٌardent longing بِهin which الآماقُthe inner eye-corners جامدةٌdry

May there be no longing that leaves the eye-corners dry,
No fervor stirred breasts cold and numb
nor passion in which yearnings never stir.
No passions stirred hearts asleep and glum

Torment me as you wish, except with distance from you; you will find
Torment me as you desire, just don't shun
the most faithful lover, rejoicing in whatever pleases you.
A loyal lover is glad to be undone

And take the last of the breath of life you have spared;
Take what remains of my fading life's spark
there is no good in love if it spares souls.
No good is a love that leaves the heart dark

Who will help me destroy my soul in reckless love
sweet of disposition, mingled with souls?
That sweetly poisons spirits above

Whoever dies of passion for him lives, ascending
Who dies consumed with love is raised high
among the people of love to the highest ranks.
Among lovers, ascends to the peak of the sky

A veiled one: were he to travel by night through darkness like his forelock,
Veiled, his pride lights his way in the night
his radiant brow would spare him any need of lamps.
Needing no torch, his conceit glowing bright
وإنand if ضَلِلْتُI lost my way بلَيْلٍin a night منof ذوائِبهِhis tresses

And if I lose my way in the night of his tresses,
If I stray in the dark, your visage at dawn
a dawn of radiance gives my eyes their guidance.
Guides my eyes, daybreak dispels what is gone

And when he breathes, musk says, confessing,
If the musk breathes, it confesses to all
to those who know its fragrance: 'My scent comes from his fragrance.'
Who know its sweet scent, spreading as night does fall

Years of his favor are as brief as a day,
Days you looked upon me like treasures untold
and a day of his turning away is as long as years.
Days you turned away stretched on, joyless and cold

So if he travels far away, O my soul, depart;
If you journey away, my soul, weep and depart
and if he draws near to visit, O my eye, rejoice!
If you visit, my heart, rejoice and take heart!

Tell him who blamed me for him and rebuked me:
Tell those who reproach me, question my mind
'Leave me to my own affairs; give up your odious counsel.'
Leave me be, tend your own, cease to be unkind

For blame is baseness, and no one has been praised for it;
Blame is a sin, it makes no one admired
and have you ever seen a lover lampooned for passion?
Did you ever see a lover by criticism inspired?

O calm-hearted one, do not look upon my beloved;
My dear friend, do not dwell on my sorry plight
save your heart, and beware the enchantment of deep-black eyes.
Save your heart, beware temptations of false delight

O my friend—I am kind and compassionate, and I have
I'm kind and gentle, I've offered my advice
offered my counsel: do not turn toward that encampment.
With purest intentions, not meaning to entice

For him I've cast off my virtue, sacrificed my faith
the acceptance of my devotions and my accepted pilgrimages.
Forsaking all that I should, my good grace

The face of my passion grew white through loving him,
Yet my love for him makes my passion glow bright
and the face of my reproach was blackened by the proofs.
While my critics are darkened, obscured in the night

Blessed is He! His beauty beyond all compare
how many souls they have slain and revived through him!
It has ruined and revived me, beyond all repair

Mention of his name by one who persists in blaming me draws
Who chants his name falls captive to his call
my ear, though blame of me on his account has never entered it.
Even if deaf, hearing his name does enthrall

I pity the lightning unveiled in the sky
with his mouth, yet ashamed before the gaps between his teeth.
Bearing his scar, too shy to shine bright

In the rim of the cup as I sip and imbibe

Sweet wine in the garden, secluded and ripe

My heart asks where we are without any fear

in their journey through a morning dawning from you.

they are the people of Badr; they fear no guilt.
They're unafraid, being people of light and fire

By my love I'm bound, though it wounds me indeed
the blaze within my ribs in obedience to longing,
No urge to obey what passion decrees

the herald's word of relief after despair:
The herald's glad tidings, when hope seemed to leave
