The breeze's fragrance traveled from al-Zawrāʾ

Before dawn, reviving the dead among the living.

Its scent brought us the breezes of Najd,

And from it the air was ambergris-scented on every side.

It recounted tales of the beloved, tracing their transmission

From idhkhir grass at Adhākhir and Sikhāʾ.

So I grew drunk on the fragrance of the hems of its cloak,

And the intoxication of healing coursed through my ailments.

O rider of the sturdy she-camel, may your wishes be fulfilled,

Turn aside toward the protected grounds if you pass through al-Jarʿāʾ,

Making for the slopes of the valley of Ḍārij,

Keeping right of the flat plain of al-Waʿsāʾ.

And when you reach the little tamarisk grove of Salʿ, then al-Naqā,

Then al-Raqmatayn, then Laʿlaʿ, then Shaẓāʾ,

And likewise, east of it, away from al-ʿAlamayn,

Turn aside toward the spacious encampment.

And convey greetings to the dear Arab folk of that winding dune,

From a love-stricken, ailing, sorrowful man far away,

A lovesick man: whenever the pilgrims return, up rise

His sighs in long, deep breaths.

Sleeplessness wounded his eyelids, and swiftly flowed

    His tears, mingled with blood.

O dwellers of al-Baṭḥāʾ, will there be a return

Through which I may live again, O dwellers of al-Baṭḥāʾ?

If my patience ends, still never ending are

My longstanding yearning for you and my torment.

And even if the autumn rain forsakes your parched soil,

My flowing tears surpass the seasonal rains.

Alas for me! Time was wasted, and I never gained

A meeting with you, dear ones of my affection.

And when can one hope for rest whose lifetime is

Two days: a day of aversion and a day of separation?

By your lives, O people of Mecca—and that, for me,

Is an oath—my innermost being is truly enamored of you.

My love for you has become my creed among people,

And passion for you my faith and the bond of my allegiance.

O you who blame me for loving one for whose sake

My yearning has gripped me fiercely, and solace has grown scarce,

Why has your reason not restrained you from blaming a man

Who is found enjoying no bliss but misery?

If you knew what you reproached me for, you would excuse me.

Go easy on yourself, and leave me to my affliction.

For those dwelling by the sarh trees of al-Murabbaʿ, then al-Shubay—

—ka, then al-Thaniyya among the ravines of Kadāʾ,

And for those at the Sacred House, and those inhabiting

Those tents, and those visiting al-Ḥathmāʾ,

And for the youths of the lush sanctuary, and the neighbors of the

Unassailable encampment, are my wistful glances and my suffering.

For they, they turned away, drew near, maintained ties, grew cold,

Betrayed, kept faith, deserted, and pitied my wasting sickness.

And they are my refuge where incantations avail nothing,

And they are my shelter if my enemies advance.

And they dwell in my heart, though their home is far

From me; they are my displeasure and my contentment in love.

And despite my dwelling in their very midst,

    At al-Akhshabayn, circling my sanctuary,

And despite my embracing the companions in greeting,

When saluting the Corner with a gesture,

And my remembrance of Ajyād—my litany in the forenoon,

And my vigil in the pitch-dark night—

And despite my stay at the Station, there has settled in

My body a sickness—and this is no time for healing.

By my life, even were the flats of its streambed turned

Into wells, my heart would find its thirst quenched by pebbles.

Aid me, dear brother, and sing to me the tale of those who

Dwelt in the gravelly flats, if you cherish my brotherhood.

And repeat it to my ears, for the soul, even if

The distance is great, takes comfort in tidings.

And when pain's hurt assails my heart's blood,

The scent of the Hijaz's little herbs is my remedy.

Am I to be driven from sweet watering in its land,

And turned aside from it, though my survival lies in its dune?

And its dwellings are my desire—yes—and its springtime

My delight, and the dispeller of hardship's grip.

And its mountains are my spring retreat, and its sands

My pasture, and its shadows my shady refuges.

And its ravines are my paradise, and its domes

My shield; upon its Ṣafā rests my serenity.

May rain greet those dwellings and hills,

And the following rain water the abodes of blessings.

And may it water the sacred stations and al-Muḥaṣṣab of Minā,

In torrents, and shower the halting places of weary mounts.

And may God guard there my dear companions, those

With whom I conversed by night at the meeting places of desire.

And may He guard the nights of al-Khayf—they were nothing but

A dream that passed with the awakening from slumber.

Ah, for that time, and all that was embraced by

The loveliness of the place, while the watchers were heedless!

Days when I frolicked in the fields of desire,

Joyful, and swaggered in the trailing robes of favor.

How wondrous are the days! They allot a young man

Gifts, and bestow on him the loss of bounty.

Oh, will our bygone life ever return

For a day? After it, I would gladly yield my remaining life.

Impossible! The effort has failed, and the loops have snapped

Of the cord of wishes, and the knot of my hope has come undone.

And it is torment enough that I spend the night enslaved by love,

My longing before me, and fate behind me.
