فماfor not اختارَهُchose it مُضْنىone wasted by sickness بهby it ولهwhile he has عقْلُreason
This is love: surrender your heart; passion is not easy.
Love is agony, so surrender to passion, for love is no easy path.
No one wasted by it chose it while still possessing reason.
He who chooses it with wisdom chose travail for himself though he be wise.

Live free of attachment, for love's ease is torment,
Live free of love, for its comfort is moaning,
Its beginning sickness, and its end death.
Its beginning sickness, its end death.
ولكنْbut لديّto me الموتُdeath فيهin it صَبابةًfrom ardent longing

حياةٌlife لمَنto the one whom أهوىI love عليّupon me بهاthrough it الفضلthe favor
Yet, to me, death in love through ardent longing
Yet in it I find a sweet vitality -
Is life—a favor for which I am indebted to the one I love.
Life for one whose merit I adore.

I have counseled you from knowledge of love; what I deem right
I advise you, knowing of love and seeing
Is to defy my counsel—so choose for yourself what pleases you.
My ways rejected, so choose what pleases you.

If you wish to live happily, then die in love
If you wish to live in bliss then die a martyr for it,
A martyr; otherwise, passion has its own devotees.
Or else love's sickness has heirs enough.
فمنfor whoever لمdid not يمُتْdie فيin حُبّهlove of him لمdid not يَعِشْlive بهthrough it

Whoever has not died in loving him has not lived through love;
Who dies not of his love, lives not by it,
And before gathering honey comes what the bees inflict.
Without bees sipping nectar, no honey in the comb.

Cling to the skirts of passion, and cast off modesty,
Cling to love's hem, doff the monk's habit,
And leave the ascetics' path, however exalted they may be.
Leave ascetics be, though highly revered.

Say to the one slain by love, 'You have paid its due,'
Tell the slain of love: you kept faith with it.
And to the pretender, 'Far from it! Natural eye-darkness is not applied kohl.'
Tell the pretender: you are far from its kohl.

Some people ventured toward passion, yet turned away,
Some approached love, then shunned its health
Turning aside from my soundness in it—and so fell ill.
In their hearts jealous of my wisdom and faltered.

They settled for wishes and were afflicted by their own interests;
Satisfied with vain hopes they risked caprice
They waded into love's seas in mere pretense, and never got wet.
And sounded the seas of love with empty claims.

In their night journey they never left their place,
They stirred not from their tracks, walked not its path,
Nor traveled away from it, though they grew weary.
Lost, though equipped, wandering not its course.

Preferring blindness to my vision,
Guidance, out of envy within themselves, they strayed.
Straying in themselves, envious.

O beloveds of my heart, with love as my intercessor
O loves of my heart, through love intercede for me,
Before you: if you wish, through it the cord is joined.
Reach out if you will, renew severed ties.

If you glance my way kindly, no sweeter joy,
For the messengers between me and you have grown weary.
No fairer grace than your messengers.

You are my beloveds, whether time treats me well or ill;
Loves, be the age bitter or sweet,
Be as you wish: I am that same intimate friend.
I am the same, be what you will of me.

If my lot is your estrangement, no enmity,
Distance, then that estrangement, to me, is union.
For your estrangement is to me union.

Turning away is only affection, so long as it is not hatred;
Rejection from you is nothing but affection
And the hardest thing, apart from your turning away, is easy.
Save when disdainful, and that is bearable.

Your torment is sweet to me, and your injustice
Your torment is sweet, your injustice, justice
Toward me, by passion's decree, is justice on your part.
I ever acquiesce in all love ordains.

My patience apart from you is bitter aloes; in bearing with you,
My patience with you and for you
I always find its bitterness growing sweet.
Seems forever as bitterness that tastes sweet.

You have taken my heart, which is part of me; what, then,
You claimed my heart, part of me, so why not
Would harm you if you had the whole?
Take all, no loss to you, though I lose all.

You went far away; apart from tears, I found nothing faithful
You deserted me, tears my only comfort,
Except a sigh boiling from the heat of longing's fire.
Scorching sighs from the fires of ardent love.

My sleeplessness lives, immortal in my eyelids,
My waking eyes are tombs where you dwell immortal,
And sleep lies dead there, with my tears its funeral washing.
My sleep is dead, tears my washing of you.

Love shed my blood unavenged among the ruins; and from
A love who slaked his thirst between seeing you
My eyelids, through its shedding, a downpour flowed down the slope.
And my eyes, his wine poured from them in draughts.

My people feigned ignorance when they saw me enslaved by love,
My people blamed me, seeing me enamored, obsessed,
And said, 'For whom is this youth stricken with madness?'
And said "What ails this youth, whom passion disturbs?"

Blessed with neglect, while love engrosses me?

By those we cherished; low estate after honor."

My eyes are dimmed, having seen none but you,
My eyelids' kissing her soil polishes away the rust.
My lids tattooed with the kohl of your rebuke.

They know I am slain by your glances,
For she has a blade in every limb.
Your swords pierce each limb and organ.

My passion is old in loving you, no innovation,
After, as she knows; nor does she have a before.
As you know well, no precedent before.

I have no equal in my passion for her, just as
I have no equal in loving you, just as
She has become a bewitchment in her beauty, without equal.
You are matchless in beauty, none compares.

The cure of my sickness is forbidden with her; I accept what
Unlawful to cure my sickness save through you
She has allotted me in love, and my blood is lawful to shed.
I accept however you divide love's means.

Though my state has worsened, through it it has become fair;
So in you my state improves, my worth never falls,
And by what lowers my worth in loving her, I rise.
The standard you set me, through you I rise higher.

Here is the sum of what I encountered in her, and what
What I found and suffered in you
Made me suffer; in speaking I am brief, without exaggeration:
Is the gist of my words, I have not been prolix.

وكيفand how تَرَىcan see العُوّادُvisitors to the sick منone who لاnot لهhas ظِلّa shadow
I vanished from wasting sickness, until my visitor lost his way;
I hid my misery until my visitors were lost,
How can visitors to the sick see someone who casts no shadow?
No shade covers one who owns no shade.

No eye has come upon my trace, nor have
No eye ever glimpsed my trace,
Those wide eyes left any vestige of me in love.
No mark of me in love's tracks for eyes to discern.

I have an aspiration that soars whenever I mention her,
I have a pride, when I recall it, it soars high,
And a spirit that grows precious through her memory whenever it is cheapened.
A spirit, that at the least thought of you, transcends.

Her love courses like my blood through my joints,
Your love courses my veins and joints,
And absorption in her diverts me from every other concern.
To love you is my sole concern, all else forgotten.

So rival a brother of passion by offering your soul for her;
Rival me in sacrificing life for your love,
If she accepts it from you, how excellent the offering!
For should you accept, how excellent the sacrifice!

Whoever does not give his soul generously in love for Nu'm,
Who finds no bliss in love, though he gave up the world,
Even if he gives the world, miserliness finds its utmost in him.
Is mean, but to lavish oneself is boundless generosity.

But for protecting your honor in jealous caution—
Whether the people of ardent love be many or few—
Be the passionate many or few—

To her, by my counsel, and turn away from all others.'
“Unite with her by my example, turn only to her.”

If she is mentioned one day, fall down at her mention
And if she is ever recalled, bow down in worship,
In prostration; if she appears, pray toward her face.
And if she glances in your direction, kneel and pray.

In loving her I sold happiness for misery,
For her I traded happiness for misery,
In error; through love my reason is a fetter keeping me from guidance.
My reason, led astray by love, grew reasonable.

I said to guidance, devotion and piety:
'Withdraw, and leave what lies between me and passion alone.'
“Begone, leave no space between love and I.”

I emptied my heart of my own existence, with pure devotion,
I emptied my heart of all but thoughts of you,
Hoping that, absorbed in her, I might be alone with her.
Hoping through loving you to be alone with you.

For you I vie with those who vie with us
And run toward, not against, one whose habit is reproach.
And race with those who never race fairly.

I delight telling tales between us, for her to know
So she may know what I endure—though she has no ignorance.
What passes and what she knows not in her ignorance.

I am drawn to the reproachers for love of hearing her mentioned,
I show goodwill to those who slander her
As though, between us in love, they were messengers.
As if they were envoys of love between us.

If they speak I am all ears, if I speak,
And if I speak to them, I am all reciting tongues.
My eloquent tongue flows sweetly.

Accounts about us have differed widely,
Our words disagree, contradicting each other,
Born in a womb of conjectures about us that have no root.
With no basis to their vagrant suspicions.

Some denounced our union though no union occurred,
Others spread rumors of forgetting, though I never forgot.
Others trembled from a joining that never occurred.

No true denunciation with her so hostile to me,
And the rumors and reports about me were lies.
Nor true tremors, mere empty rumors and tales.
وكيفَand how أُرَجّيcan I hope for وصْلَunion with مَنْone whom لوif تصوّرَتْimagined
حِماهاher sanctuary المُنىwishes وهْماًin fancy لضاقتwould surely narrow بهاupon them السُّبلthe paths
How can I hope for union with one, when, were wishes to imagine
How expect joining with one who cannot conceive
Her sanctuary even in fancy, the paths would close upon them?
A thought of fulfilling the dream without roads closing?
وإنand if وعدَتْshe promises لمnot يلحَقِcatches up with الفعلُthe deed قولَهاher word
وإنand if أوْعدَتْshe threatens بالقولِin words يسبقُهُprecedes it الفعلthe deed
If she promises, the deed never catches up with her word;
If she promises, deeds never match her words,
If she threatens in words, the deed precedes them.
Yet if she pledges words, deeds outrun them.
عِدينيpromise me بوَصْلٍof union وامْطُلِيand delay بنَجَازِهِin fulfilling it
فعِنديfor to me إذاwhen صحis true الهوىpassion حَسُنَis sweet المطلdelay
Promise me union, and delay its fulfillment;
Promise me a union and keep postponing its payment,
For, to me, when love is true, delay is sweet.
For if love is true, postponement has its own beauty.
وحُرْمَةِby the sanctity of عهدٍa covenant بينَناbetween us عنهfrom it لمnot أحُلْI turned aside
وعَقْدٍand a bond بأيْدٍwith strength بينَناbetween us ماnot لهfor it حَلُّan undoing
By the sanctity of a covenant between us, from which I have not turned,
No oath sworn between us do I deem dissolved,
And a firmly tied bond between us that cannot be undone:
No covenant between us undone.
لأنتِindeed you علىdespite غيظِthe spite of النّوىseparation ورِضىand the consent of الهوىpassion
لدَيّwith me وقلبيand my heart ساعةًfor an hour منكِof you ماnot يخلوis empty
You are indeed—despite separation's spite, with passion's consent—
You alternate hot wrath and cool consent,
With me; my heart is not empty of you for a single hour.
Yet in my heart you dwell each moment.
تُرَىI wonder whether مُقْلَتيmy eye يوماًone day تَرَىwill see مَنthose whom أُحِبّهمْI love them
ويَعْتِبُنِيand makes amends to me دهريmy time ويجتمعand reunites الشّملthe scattered company
Will my eye one day see those I love,
One day my friends will look upon my loves,
And will time make amends to me, and our scattered company reunite?
Chide my days, and reunions will come to pass.
وماand not برِحواthey ceased معنىًin essence أراهُمْI see them معيwith me فإنand if

In essence they have never left: I see them with me; if
Never did they depart in meaning, I see them with me,
They are distant in form, their likeness rises in my mind.
If absent in form, still in memory they take shape.

Outwardly they are before my eyes wherever they journey by night,
They are my heart's concern apparent wherever they are,
And inwardly they are in my heart wherever they alight.
And dwell in my soul unseen wherever they alight.
لهُمْfor them أبداًalways منيfrom me حُنُوٌّtenderness وإنeven if جَفَواthey turn cold

From me they always have tenderness, though they shun me;
They have my lasting affection though aloof,
And I am always drawn to them, though they grow weary.
I lean forever toward them though distant.
