أرى الحمّام موعظة وذكرى

أرى الحمّام موعظة وذكرى

لكلِّ فتىً أريبٍ ذي ذكاءِ

لكلِّ فتىً أريبٍ ذي ذكاءِ

I see the bathhouse as an admonition and a reminder

The dove inspires me with advice and memories

for every discerning youth endowed with intelligence.

For every young perceptive Arab man

يذكِّرنا عذاب ذوي المعاصي

يذكِّرنا عذاب ذوي المعاصي

وأحيا نعيمُ الأتقياءِ

وأحيا نعيمُ الأتقياءِ

It reminds us of the torment of sinners,

It reminds us of the torment of sinners

and the bliss of the pious revives us.

And the bliss of the pious

شقا هَجرٍ يشوبُ نعيمَ وصلٍ

شقا هَجرٍ يشوبُ نعيمَ وصلٍ

وحرُّ النارِ في برد الهواءِ

وحرُّ النارِ في برد الهواءِ

The misery of separation taints the bliss of union,

The pain of separation mars the joy of union

and fire's heat lies amid the coolness of the air.

And fire burns hot amidst the cool air

إذا مأ أرضه التهبت بنارِ

إذا مأ أرضه التهبت بنارِ

تبادر سمكه هطلاً بماءِ

تبادر سمكه هطلاً بماءِ

Whenever its floor blazes with fire,

When its land is flooded it lights up in flames

its ceiling hastens to shower down water,

Seeking water pouring down from the skies

كصدرِ الصَب جاش بما يلاقي

كصدرِ الصَب جاش بما يلاقي

فلجَّ الطرفُ منه بالبكاءِ

فلجَّ الطرفُ منه بالبكاءِ

like a lovesick man's breast, surging with what he endures,

Like a young man's heart aflame with passion

so his eye persists in weeping.

His eyes overflow with copious tears

كان له حبيباً بان عنهُ

كان له حبيباً بان عنهُ

فبان وخانته حُسنُ العَزاءِ

فبان وخانته حُسنُ العَزاءِ

He had a beloved who departed from him,

He had a lover who left him

so he departed, and the beauty of consolation betrayed him.

She left betraying him despite her beauty
