لَقَبيحٌ في الناسِ مِن غَيرِ جُرمٍ

لَقَبيحٌ في الناسِ مِن غَيرِ جُرمٍ

بَعدَ وَصلٍ قَطيعَةُ الأَخَوَينِ

بَعدَ وَصلٍ قَطيعَةُ الأَخَوَينِ

Truly ugly among people, without any wrongdoing,

Accused among men though I am guiltless,

is the estrangement of two brothers after closeness.

After friendship, severance of two brothers,

لا تَكُن كَالحِمارِ إِذ طَلَبَ القِر

لا تَكُن كَالحِمارِ إِذ طَلَبَ القِر

نَ لِنَفعٍ فَضَيَّعَ الأُذُنَين

نَ لِنَفعٍ فَضَيَّعَ الأُذُنَين

Do not be like the donkey when it sought a horn

Be not like the donkey that lost his ears

for gain, and so lost both ears.

Seeking bran though he had no lack or need.
