تَحَمَّلَpacked up to leave الظاعِنونَthe departing travelers فَاِدَّلَجواthen they set out by night
وَالقَلبُand the heart مِنّيof mine الغَداةَthis morning مُختَلِجُtrembling
The departing travelers broke camp and set out by night;
The slanderers endured, so they slithered,
and my heart this morning is trembling.
and my heart in the morning was trembling,
بانواthey departed بِخَودٍwith a young woman كَأَنَّas though رُؤيَتَهاthe sight of her
بَدرٌa full moon بَداappeared وَالظَلامُand the darkness مُرتَهِجُdense
They left with a young woman, the sight of whom was like
they appeared with a cheek, as if seeing it
a full moon appearing amid thick darkness.
was a full moon rising while the darkness was aflame,
غَرّاءُradiant رَيّاwell-fleshed العِظامِof the bones آنِسَةٌcompanionable
مَكسورَةُlanguid العَينِof the eye زانَهاadorned her دَعَجُdeep blackness of large eyes
Radiant, with a well-fleshed frame, companionable,
a coquette, the bones were delighted by her,
languid-eyed, graced with large, dark eyes.
the one with languishing eyes, her beauty enthralled me,
ياO وَيحَalas for نَفسيmy soul أَماis there not لَناfor us أَبَداًever
مِنfrom حُبِّهاlove for her سَلوَةٌforgetfulness وَلاnor فَرَجُrelief
Alas for my soul! Will we never find
oh, woe to my soul, will we never have,
release from loving her, or relief?
solace from her love, nor relief?
إِنif يَكُit be أَمسىhas now become الغَيورُthe jealous man حَصَّنَهاkept her guarded
وَغَيَّرَتهاand changed her الشُهورُthe months وَالحِجَجُand the years
Even if the jealous man has now kept her guarded,
If the jealous one fortified her last night,
and months and years have changed her,
and the months and pilgrimages changed her,
وَلَوand if تَراناyou see us مَعَwith الجِلاءِthe unveiling إِذاًthen
بَداappeared لِعَينَيكَto your eyes مَنظَرٌa sight بَهِجُdelightful
yet had you seen us at the unveiling, then
and if you could see us with the revealing one, then
a delightful sight would have met your eyes.
a delightful sight would appear before your eyes,
ياO حُسنَهاher beauty إِذwhen تَقولُshe says مازِحَةًjokingly
وَنَحنُwhile we فَوقَupon السَريرِthe bed نَعتَفِجُwe make love
How lovely she was when she said in jest,
oh, her beauty when she jokes,
while we were making love upon the bed,
while we above the bed writhe,
لَقَدindeed حَرِجناwe have sinned وَهيَwhile she مُعانِقَتيembracing me
تَلثَمُنيshe kisses me وَالصَباحُwhile the dawn مُنبَلِجُbreaking
“We have surely sinned!”—while she embraced me,
we were embarrassed while she embraced me,
kissing me as dawn was breaking.
kissed me, and the morning was shining,
فَقُلتُso I said ياO مُنيَتيmy heart's desire وَياand O سَكَنيmy solace
ماthere is no فيin عِناقٍan embrace وَقُبلَةٍand a kiss حَرَجُsin
So I said, “O my heart's desire, and O my solace,
so I said, “oh, my demise and my peace,
there is no sin in an embrace and a kiss.”
there is no shame in an embrace or kiss.”
