قُلSay لِلأَميرِto the emir جَزاكَmay He reward you اللهُGod صالِحَةًa good reward
قُل لِلأَميرِ جَزاكَ اللهُ صالِحَةً
لاnot يَجمَعُbrings together الدَهرُtime بَينَbetween السَخلِthe lamb وَالذيبِand the wolf
لا يَجمَعُ الدَهرُ بَينَ السَخلِ وَالذيبِ
Say to the emir: may God grant you a good reward.
Tell the prince, may God reward you with goodness
Time does not bring the lamb and the wolf together.
Time does not unite the foolish and the cunning
السَخلُthe lamb غِرٌّnaïve وَهَمُّand the concern الذِئبِthe wolf غَفلَتُهُits heedlessness
السَخلُ غِرٌّ وَهَمُّ الذِئبِ غَفلَتُهُ
وَالذِئبُand the wolf يَعلَمُknows ماwhat فيin السَخلِthe lamb مِنof طيبِtastiness
وَالذِئبُ يَعلَمُ ما في السَخلِ مِن طيبِ
The lamb is naïve, and the wolf is intent on its heedlessness.
The foolish one is ignorant, and the cunning wolf is absentminded
And the wolf knows what is delectable in the lamb.
Yet the cunning wolf knows the goodness in the foolish one
