مِنout of حُبِّهاlove for her أَتَمَنّىI wish أَنthat يُلاقِيَنيhe might meet me
مِنfrom نَحوِthe direction of بَلدَتِهاher town ناعٍa bearer of death-tidings فَيَنعاهاand announce her death
Out of love for her, I wish to be met
Out of my love for her I wish that
By a bearer of death-tidings from the direction of her town, announcing her death,
A passing breeze from her land would come to me
كَيماso that أَقولُI say فِراقٌa parting لاno لِقاءَreunion لَهُfor it
وَتُضمِرُand harbors النَفسُthe soul يَأساًdespair ثُمَّthen تَسلاهاforgets her
So I might say, "A parting with no reunion,"
So that I may say parting has no meeting
And my soul would harbor despair, then forget her.
And my soul harbors despair and then finds solace in it
وَلَوand if تَموتُshe dies لَراعَتنيshe would appall me وَقُلتُand I would say لَهاto her
ياO بُؤسَwoe لِلمَوتِto death لَيتَif only الدَهرَtime أَبقاهاhad kept her alive
Yet if she died, her death would appall me, and I would say to her:
And if she dies it would terrify me and I would say to her
"Woe to death! If only time had kept her alive!"
What a pity death is! If only fate had let her live
