ياO طولَthe length of هَذاthis اللَيلِthe night لَمnot أَرقُدِI slept
إِلّاexcept رُقادَthe sleep of الوَصِبِthe sick man الأَرمَدِthe sore-eyed man
Oh, how long this night! I have not slept
O long night, I could not sleep
except the sleep of a sick man with inflamed eyes.
Except the sleep of the sleepless, distressed
مِثلَlike اِكتِحالِapplying kohl to العَينِthe eye نَوميmy sleep بِهِin it
بَلrather دونَless than كُحلِkohl العَينِthe eye بِالمِروَدِwith the kohl-stick
My sleep in it lasts only as long as applying kohl to an eye,
My sleep was like kohl on the eye
nay, less than lining the eye with a kohl-stick.
Nay, less than eye kohl, with collyrium
أُراقِبُI watch for الصُبحَthe dawn كَأَنّيas though I اِمرُؤٌa man

I watch for dawn as though I were a man
I watch for dawn as if I were a man
with an appointment for rest at its coming.
Expecting comfort, as we had agreed
بِتُّI spent the night إِلىuntil أَنthat راعَنيstartled me ضَوؤُهُits light

I kept vigil until its light startled me,
I waited until its gleam startled me
and a finger of my hand was behind my tooth,
And my finger hid behind my tooth

أَقرَبُthe nearest of جيرانيmy neighbors لِذيto that one الأَبعَدِthe farthest away
in astonishment at what was inflicted on me by
Amazed at what my closest neighbor told me
my nearest neighbor, concerning that faraway one.
Though he is the furthest from truth
رَقّىhe conveyed إِلَيهاto her كَذِباًlies لَمnot يَكُنhad occurred

He carried to her lies that had never come
He climbed to her falsely, it was not
from me, while walking or sitting,
From me, neither my path nor abode

until she grew haughty—indeed, her mind was turned
Until she turned away, rather she bent her determination
away from me by the spiteful mischief-maker's words.
From the words of the slanderous corruptor
فيin الصَدرِthe breast مِمّاfrom what بُلِّغَتshe was told حِبَّتيmy beloved

In my breast, from what my beloved was told,
In my chest from what my love was told
is a flame like a firebrand fetched to kindle a fire.
Like the spark of the ignited firebrand

If a burning pang cools in my liver,
If the anguish cooled from my liver
it lingers upon my heart and does not cool.
It would last long in the heart and not cool

But you who tell tales about her in our presence,
Rather, O slanderer, with her among us
may you never cease displeasing me—do still more!
Still you do not please me, so do more
أَنتَyou لَعَمرُby the life of اللَهِGod أَوجَدتَهاyou angered her
عَلَيَّagainst me حَتّىuntil كَدَّرَتshe muddied مَورِديmy watering-place
By God's life, you have made her angry
By God, it is you who evoked it against me
against me, until she muddied my watering-place.
Until you dirtied my stream

And I had been captivated through her by a companion
And I thought she was a friend
who made excuses about the matter and could not be found.
Who falters in judgment and was not present
لَمnot تَرَyou saw مِثليone like me مُغرَماًenamored بِالهَوىwith love

وَمِثلَand one like عَبّادَةَʿAbbādah لَمnot تَقصِدِyou sought
You have never seen one like me enthralled by love,
You have not seen one so enamored with love
nor have you sought one like ʿAbbādah.
And worship as I have not intended
تَبروshe recovers لَدىduring هَجريmy estrangement وَأَدوىand I grow sicker بِهِfrom it
فَلَستُso I am not بِالحَيِّamong the living وَلاnor بِالرَديamong the dead
She recovers during my estrangement, while I grow sicker from it;
They shunned me and I was sick with yearning
so I am neither living nor dead,
So I am neither alive nor returning
لَكِنَّنيbut I مِثلُlike سَبيلِهِماthe path of them both

but I am as though on the path between the two,
But I am like their path
like one bitten by a black snake.
Like the black serpent’s burrow

أَدالِجٌare you traveling by night? أَنتَyou وَلَمand not تَعهَدِbid farewell
How different this conduct of hers is from her message:
Vast is the difference between her and sending
Are you traveling by night without saying farewell?
You are unjust and did not fulfill
غَداةَthe morning زُمَّتwere haltered إِبليmy camels غُدوَةًearly in the morning
وَالقَومُand the people مِنamong باكٍone weeping وَمِنand among مُسعِدِone sharing the grief
That morning, when my camels were haltered at dawn,
The next morning when my camel was loaded
some people wept and others shared their grief.
While the people wept and were joyous
فَقُلتُso I said إِنif آبواthey returned فَأَنتِthen you الهَوىlove
وَإِنand if أَرُحI depart مِنكِfrom you فَلاthen do not تَبعُدِgrow distant
So I said: If they return, you are my love;
I said: if they wish then you are my love
and if I depart from you, do not grow distant.
And if I depart from you then do not go far

O ʿAbd, do not forget—for I have not forgotten—
O slave do not forget, so I did not forget
my walk within the mosque, when I was a beginner,
My walk between the started and ended mosque

the day ʿUbayd Allāh was like an aggressor
The day Ubaydah was like the aggressor
against me over my love for you—or truly was one.
Against me in your love or an aggressor

He said, when he saw me approaching
He said when he saw me approaching
among the people, turbaned but without a cloak,
Silent among the people and did not turn back

To one free from what preoccupies him
ungrieved by love and never witness to it—
He was not inspired by love or witnessed it

when he saw him, his eye beheld
When he saw him, his eye witnessed
one disheveled in dress at the gathering:
Distorted clothes in the scene

وَكانَand he was حيناًfor a time مِنamong حَصىthe pebbles of المَسجِدِthe mosque
This is she whose love bewildered him,
It is she who led him astray with her love
though for a time he was among the mosque's pebbles.
And he was once a pebble of the mosque
فَقُلتُso I said ياO صاحِfriend بِهاwith her حَيِّنيgreet me

So I said: Friend, greet me with her name;
So I said: O friend of her, give me life
leave me to my plight; I am not one to be guided.
Allow me to what is in me, I am not guided

I was, as you said, one of its sons,
I was, as you said, one of its people
while my temptation, ʿAbdah, lay in wait.
And my sedition was Worshipper of the Watch

As I was thus, she suddenly flashed a flash
While so, suddenly a lightning flashed
between a silk-wool cloak and her undergarment,
Between the robes and pillar

White, beautiful, dyed yellow
swaying upon the supple bough of youth.
Swaying on the youthful twig’s branch

The neighbors envy her for her beauty
and let one like ʿAbbādah be envied!
And worship like her should be envied

They envy her a stalk filled
her bracelet, anklet, and armlet.
For the heart, anklet, and arm

Pearls and rubies envy her

And laughing from her as she flashed
of a summer raincloud that does not thunder,
Like summer lightning and did not thunder

She is a black-eyed nymph
a beauty who needs no antimony kohl.
A singing girl who sings without instruments

They envy her that form
by which she stood high in my esteem and never sat low.
Which stood by me and did not sit

She has no fault save her postponing,
No flaw in her but her delay
each morning, our promised meeting until tomorrow.
Each morning she promised and did not come
