ياO طَيبَTayb سِيّانَalike عِنديto me أَنتِyou وَالطيبُand perfume
كِلاكُماboth of you طَيِّبُsweet الأَنفاسِbreaths مَحبوبُbeloved
O Tayb, you and perfume are alike to me.
O gentle Siyan, you and gentleness are with me
Both of you are sweet of breath and beloved.
Both of you are gentle of breath, beloved
لَوif قَدindeed لَقيتُكِI met you خَلفَbeyond العَينِsight خالِيَةًalone
أَصلَحتِyou would mend مِنّيin me الَّذيwhat لاnot يُصلِحُmends الطيبُperfume
If I met you alone, out of sight,
If I had met you alone behind the eye,
You would mend in me what perfume cannot mend.
You would have corrected in me what gentleness cannot correct
لَوif كُنتِyou were غَيرَother than فَتاةٍa maiden كُنتِyou would be لُؤلُؤَةًa pearl

If you were not a maiden, you would be a pearl,
If you were not a girl, you would have been a pearl
For which a king, his head bound with a crown, would pay dearly.
Precious to a king, crowned
ياO طَيبَTayb جوديbe generous بِنَيلٍwith a favor مِنكِfrom you نَأمُلُهُwe hope for it

O Tayb, grant us the favor we hope for from you,
O gentle one, grant us some of your generosity that we hope for
And give us hope, for there is no sin in hoping.
And make us covetous, for there is no sin in hoping
لِلَّهِto God (in admiration) طَيبَةُTayba لاnot تُبقيspares عَلىupon رَجُلٍa man

By God, Tayba spares no man
By God, you are gentle and leave no man
In whose heart a thought is kindled like fire.
With a heart restless as burning embers
أُساوِرُI wrestle with الهَمَّsorrow تَحتَbeneath اللَيلِthe night مُجتَنِحاًleaning to one side

I wrestle with sorrow beneath the night, leaning to one side;
The bracelets of anxiety under the night leaning over me
A moon hidden behind the veil has wasted me away.
A moon hidden behind the veil has healed me

From longing for her, death overwhelms me in steady rains,
Death takes me suddenly out of constant passion for her
And torrential downpours of yearning seize me.
And yearning seizes me with its flames

The heart has a watcher turned toward her, who never leaves it,
My heart has a shepherd who never leaves it
And in the inner self are love's marvels.
And wonders of love are in my conscience

Distraught, he may crave relief by which to live,
Scorched with desire for a soul to live by
His ardent longing plain to see—and estrangement is torment.
Separation and youth are torment
