وَلاand do not تَدخُليenter بَينيbetween me وَبَينَand between المُشَمرِجِal-Mushamrij
O our neighbor, you have missed your chance—so leave,
You have wronged me, you missed your chance, so leave
and do not come between me and al-Mushamrij.
And come no more between me and the sleeve-roller
أَخيmy brother لامَنيrebuked me أَوor لُمتُهُI rebuked him ثُمَّthen نَرعَويwe come to our senses
إِلىto ثابِتٍsteadfastness مِنof حِلمِناour forbearance غَيرِnot مُخدَجِdeficient
My brother rebuked me—or I rebuked him—then we return
My friend, do not blame me or chide me, then let us graze
to our steadfast, undiminished forbearance.
On steady patience, not rash or led astray
نَعودُwe return إِذاwhen اِعوَجَّتturned crooked سَبيلٌa path بِأَهلِهاwith its people
حِفاظاًout of loyalty وَلَيسَand is not الحَقُّthe truth فيناamong us بِأَعوَجِat all crooked
We turn back when a path turns crooked for its people,
We will return, if the course crooked with its people
out of loyalty; the truth among us is not crooked.
Carefully, though right's not in us bent or wayward
فَأَبقيso preserve عَلىhold on to وُدٍّaffection كَرَهطِكِlike your clan عِندَناwith us

So keep affection with us, as your clan does,
So stay kindly, your kin with us, go not astray
and do not stray into arrogance, daughter of Maghnaj.
O daughter of Magnij, lost in the waste

I am the poet renowned in every land;
I am the famed poet in every abode
I arrive with the like of a sword, never faltering.
I strike like an unsheathed sword, not wavering
تَرَكتُI left اِبنَson of نِهياNihya ضُحكَةًa laughingstock لِاِبنِfor the son of سالِمٍSalim

I left Ibn Nihya a laughingstock for Ibn Salim,
I left Ibn Nihya laughing at Ibn Salim
and made Hammad laugh at al-Mu'affaj's arse.
And made Hammad laugh about Istil Mu'affaj
وَإِنيand indeed I لَنَهّاضُsurely ever raising اليَدَينِboth hands إِلىtoward العُلىthe heights

And I indeed keep raising both hands toward the heights,
Lo, I stretch out my hands up high
ever knocking at the doors of the crowned, magnanimous lord.
Calloused to the doors of great souls crowned
أَهونُI grow meek إِذاwhen عَزَّgrows proud الخَليطُthe companion وَرُبَّماand sometimes

I grow meek when my companion grows proud; yet sometimes
I am calmer if the throng grows noisome
I have tugged at the serpent's twisting head.
I may smite the serpent's head when it rears up
وَماand not زالَceased ليfor me جَدٌّgood fortune يَقينيprotects me مِنَfrom الرَدىdeath

And I have always had good fortune guarding me from death,
My lineage still protects me from vileness
and it rises in spite of the contemptible enemy.
And rises above the enemy however slippery
وَماand not ذاكَthat مِنfrom حَولٍstrength وَلَكِنbut كَرامَةٌan honor

That is not from my own strength, but an honor
Not by chance but a bounty from God
from God, through which He guards me on every path.
Who guards me thereby wherever I tread

Those of noble lineage recognize my eminence among them,
The worthy see majesty in me
and my close friend is no base, rash fellow.
My friend's no base groveller jousting
وَعَيرِand an ass of أُناسٍsome people قَدindeed كَوَيتُI branded عِجانَهُhis perineum

And some people's ass—I have branded his perineum;
The slander of folk I have cauterized
if ever I brand an ass, let him be well roasted!
When I cauterize slander on a day I triumph

And I, in praising Haytham as I seek bounty,
In my praise of Haytham I seek glory
am surely like one seeking kindness in Ibn Da'laj's arse.
Like one seeking favor in Istibn Da'laj

And a night of choice wine—I joined its bliss
On the night of Khartoum I joined its bliss
with a dark-eyed woman, bashful when she did not hold back,
To a houri too shy if not urged
لُباخِيَّةِplump of الأَردافِbuttocks لَمnever تَرعَtend ثِلَّةًa flock

ample-bottomed, who had never tended a flock
Lubakhiyya of ample buttocks who grazed no flock
in the shade, nor ridden a camel in a howdah.
With loot, rode no camel in a howdah

And a fair-skinned woman whose cheek and brow glisten
White of cheek and brow perfumed
with musk above the blazing censer.
With musk over the glowing embers
فَباتَتso she spent the night مِزاجَthe admixture of الكَأسِthe cup حَتّىuntil تَبَيَّنَتappeared

She spent the night as the cup's admixture, until there appeared
She kept drinking till the cups showed
the first gleams of a bright rift revealing dawn.
The white dawn-gleams breaking at daybreak
فَلَمّاthen when دَناdrew near وَجهُthe face of الوَداعِfarewell تَفَجَّعَتshe grieved

Then, when the face of farewell drew near, she grieved
When the time of parting drew near she grieved
for a delightful night and a secret lodged within.
Over a sweet night and hidden pleasures

She said to her two companions, "Weep," and there shimmered
And she said weeping to the one who reared her
tears in her eyes, as she feared and hoped.
Her tears flowing, fearful and trembling
فَياso, oh حُسنَهاher beauty إِذwhen نَلتَقيwe meet بِمَهايِلٍat Mahayil

And oh, her beauty when we met at Mahayil,
So beauty, when we meet with lovers
two lovers taking refuge in a sea of love!
In a sea of love, we will plunge together
لَياليnights when قالَتshe said أَنتَyou غادٍdeparting ضُحىmidmorning غَدٍtomorrow
وَنَبقىand we remain عَلىin شَوقٍlonging إِلَيكِfor you وَنَنشَجِand we sob
On nights when she said, "You leave at midmorning tomorrow,
Nights she said, “You're leaving at dawn
and we will remain yearning for you and sobbing."
And we'll remain longing for you and yearning”
هُناكَthere اِلتَقَيناwe met تَحتَbeneath عَينٍa rain cloud مَطيرَةٍrain-bearing

There we met beneath a rain-laden cloud,
There we met under a rainy cloud
and Rayyan lay sprawled like an ass with its jugular slit.
The downpour like a laden donkey streaking
فَبِتُّso I spent the night بِبَدرٍwith a full moon يَملَأُfills العَينَthe eye نورُهُits light

So I spent the night with a full moon whose light filled the eye,
I spent the night in a full moon drenching the eye
slender-waisted and steeped in saffron.
Shedding on the saffron its light filtering

When the cup burned me, I soothed its heat
When the wine burnt me I cured its heat
with icy moisture amid a string of spaced pearls.
With a frosted glass, pearls interlinked
وَكَيفَand how بِسَلمىabout Salma أَحرَمَhas forbidden النَأيُdistance وَجهَهاher face

And what of Salma? Distance has made her face forbidden
How can Salma, whose face grew forbidden to me
to me; and even if she came our way, she would not linger.
Though we circled, not draw near
وَقَدand already زُوِّجَتshe was married to عُثمانَUthman دَرّاًa pearl غَريرَةًinnocent

And she, an innocent pearl, has been married to Uthman;
She was wed to Uthman, a precious pearl
oh, would that I had been Uthman when she was still unwed!
Would I were Uthman since she was married!
