ياO صاحِبَيَّmy two friends دَعاleave off, you two لَوميblaming me وَتَفنيديand calling me foolish
يا صاحِبَيَّ دَعا لَومي وَتَفنيدي
فَلَيسَfor ... is not ماwhat فاتَhas passed مِنof أَمرٍan affair بِمَردودِto be brought back
فَلَيسَ ما فاتَ مِن أَمرٍ بِمَردودِ
O my two friends, cease blaming me and calling me foolish.
O my friend, let go of blaming and criticizing me
For no bygone affair can be brought back.
For what is past cannot be undone
ماnot لِلفَتىfor a young man غَيرُother than ماwhat أَعطىhas given الإِلَهُGod وَماand what
ما لِلفَتى غَيرُ ما أَعطى الإِلَهُ وَما
يَمنَعHe withholds فَذَلِكَthen that شَيءٌa thing غَيرُnot مَوجودِto be found
يَمنَع فَذَلِكَ شَيءٌ غَيرُ مَوجودِ
A young man has only what God has given, and what
A man has naught but what God has granted him
He withholds—that is a thing nowhere to be found.
And what He withholds does not exist
وَالأَمرُand the affair صَعبٌdifficult إِذاif أَخطَأتَyou mistake وِجهَتَهُits direction
وَالأَمرُ صَعبٌ إِذا أَخطَأتَ وِجهَتَهُ
حَتّىuntil تُوَفَّقَyou are guided aright مِنهُof it لِلمَراشيدِto the right paths
حَتّى تُوَفَّقَ مِنهُ لِلمَراشيدِ
And an affair is hard if you mistake its direction,
The matter grows hard when you miss its true course
until you are guided to its right paths.
Until you are guided aright by the enlightened
فَلَيتَso, if only شِعريmy knowing عَلىin light of قيلِthe words الوُشاةِof the slanderers لَناto us
فَلَيتَ شِعري عَلى قيلِ الوُشاةِ لَنا
إِذwhen أَزمَعَresolved to depart الحَيُّthe clan وَاِنصاعواand they set off لِتَصعيدِfor an onward journey
إِذ أَزمَعَ الحَيُّ وَاِنصاعوا لِتَصعيدِ
So, if only I knew, in light of the slanderers' words to us,
I wonder, as the slanderers say of us
when the clan resolved to depart and set off on an onward journey,
When the living intended and inclined towards ascension
حَيثُwhere اِستَقَلَّتshe departed وَصَدَّتand she turned away لاnot تُكَلِّمُناshe speaks to us
حَيثُ اِستَقَلَّت وَصَدَّت لا تُكَلِّمُنا
وَالدَمعُand the tears يَجريflow عَلىover الخَدَّينِthe two cheeks وَالجيدِand the neck
وَالدَمعُ يَجري عَلى الخَدَّينِ وَالجيدِ
where she departed and turned away, not speaking to us,
When she became independent and turned away, not speaking to us
while tears flowed over her cheeks and neck.
While tears flowed down the cheeks and brow
قَدindeed كُنتُI was آمُلُhoping مِنfrom نُعمٍNuʿm مَواعِدَهاher promises
قَد كُنتُ آمُلُ مِن نُعمٍ مَواعِدَها
فَماyet not وَأَتshe promised ليto me وَماand not جاءَتshe came بِمَوعودِwith something promised
فَما وَأَت لي وَما جاءَت بِمَوعودِ
I had hoped for Nuʿm's promises,
I had hoped for favors whose time had come
yet she made me no promise, nor brought anything promised.
But none came my way nor kept their promise
