إِلّاexcept لَدَيكِwith you فَهَلso, is ماwhat رُمتُI sought مَوجودُavailable
O Hubba, the cure for love is nowhere to be found
O Love, the remedy for love is lost
Except with you—so is what I seek available?
Except with you, so is what I wish for found?
قالَتshe said عَلَيكَyou must turn بِمَنto whoever تَهوىyou love فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her

ياO حُبَّHubba فوكِyour mouth الهَوىlove وَالعَينُand the eye وَالجيدُand the neck
She said, “Turn to the one you love”; I said to her:
She said "who do you love?" I said "For her love
O Hubba, love is your mouth, your eye, and your neck.
My eyes, forehead, and hands are bound."
لاdo not تَلعَبيtoy بِحَياتيwith my life وَاِقطَعيand cut off أَمَليmy hope

صَبراًpatience عَلىin facing المَوتِdeath إِنَّindeed المَوتَdeath مَورودُto be reached
Do not toy with my life; cut off my hope.
Don't play with my life or cut off my hope
Patience in the face of death—for death must be met.
With patience for death, for death is fated.
رُؤياكِthe sight of you تَدعوsummons المَناياdeaths قَبلَbefore مَوقِتِهاtheir appointed time

The sight of you summons death before its appointed time.
Your dream calls death before its time
And if you grant a favor, a favor from you is everlasting.
And if you grant me, your grant is everlasting.
أَنتِyou الأَميرَةُthe sovereign فيin روحيmy soul وَفيand in جَسَديmy body

You are the sovereign of my soul and my body;
You're the princess of my soul and body
So pare me down and feather me; the keys are in your two hands.
So correct my feathers with your gentle hands.
لاdo not تَسبِقيhasten ahead بيwith me حِمامَthe doom of المَوتِdeath وَاِنتَظِريand wait

يَوماًa day كَأَنas though قَدalready طَوَتنيfolded me away البيضُthe white days وَالسودُand the black nights
Do not hasten me to death’s doom; wait
Don't hasten me to the pigeons of death, and wait
A day—as though white days and black nights had already folded me away.
A day when I'm enveloped in white and black.
قَدindeed لامَنيreproached me فيكِover you أَقوامٌpeople فَقُلتُso I said لَهُمto them

People have reproached me over you; I told them:
Some people blamed me for you, so I said
What fault has one whose heart is burning and exhausted?
What's the fault of one whose heart is burning, exhausted?

I was not the first man maddened by a girl
I wasn't the first madman for a girl
Who befuddled his reason, though the man was valiant.
Who made his heart foolish; man is stubborn.

An unheeding ear incited blame against him,
Blame falls on deaf ears unhearing
And a dark-eyed, trembling one wearing two necklaces.
While the eye of the critic is clouded in tears.
أَحبَبتُI loved حُبّىHubba وَماand not حُبّىHubba بِمُطَّلَبيwhat I seek
مَنone who لَيسَthere is not ليfor me عِندَهُwith him إِلّاexcept الجَلاميدُboulders
I loved Hubba; yet, Hubba, I do not seek
I loved my love, though she didn't love me
One who has nothing for me but boulders.
For her I have only words, no deeds.
بِئسَwretched is العَطِيَّةُthe gift مِنfrom حُبّىHubba لَناto us حَجَرٌa stone
بَلrather لَيسَthere is not ليfor me حَجَرٌa stone مِنهاfrom her وَلاnor عودُa stick
A stone is a wretched gift from Hubba to us;
A poor gift she has given me, a stone -
Yet I have neither a stone from her nor a stick.
No, she hasn't given me even a stick or firewood.
تَغدوshe goes forth at dawn ثَقالاًstately وَتُمسيand is at evening فيin مَجاسِدِهاher dyed robes

كَأَنَّهاas though she were صَنَمٌan idol فيin الحَيِّthe tribe مَعبودُworshipped
She goes forth stately at dawn and spends evening in her dyed robes,
She wakes heavily and sleeps lazily
Like an idol worshipped among the tribe.
As if she's an idol among the living, worshipped.
نامَتshe slept وَلَمand did not أَلقَI find نَوماًsleep بَعدَafter رُؤيَتِهاseeing her

She slept, but I found no sleep after seeing her.
She slept and I couldn't sleep after seeing her
Can one whose eyes burn with tears, stricken with love, sleep?
Does the fiery-eyed ever sleep content?
ياoh حُسنَthe beauty of حُبّىHubba إِذاwhen قامَتshe rose لِجارَتِهاto her neighbor
وَفيand in الرَواحِthe evening departure هَضيمُslender الكَشحِthe waist أُملودُsupple
How beautiful Hubba is when she rises to go to her neighbor,
O beauty of my love, when she stood before her neighbor
And goes out at evening, slender-waisted and supple.
The slender-waisted sways gently bent.
كَأَنَّهاas though she were لَذَّةُthe delight of الفِتيانِyoung men موفِيَةًkeeping her word
وَسَكرَةُand the agony of المَوتِdeath إِنif لَمnot يوفَis fulfilled مَوعودُa promise
As though she were young men’s delight when she keeps her word,
As if she's the pleasure of youth, loyal
And death’s agony if a promise is not fulfilled.
And the intoxication of death, if the promised is not kept.
تُؤتيكَshe grants you ماwhat شِئتَyou wish مِنof عَهدٍa pledge وَمِنand of عِدَةٍa promise
فَالوَعدُso the promise دانٍnear وَبابُand the gate of النَيلِattainment مَسدودُbarred
She gives you whatever pledges and promises you wish;
You give what you wish of vows and numbers
So the promise is near, but the gate of fulfillment is barred.
But the promise is close and the door of attainment shut.
قَدindeed صَرَّدَتleft unquenched هامَتيmy head حُبّىHubba بِبَخلَتِهاthrough her stinginess

ماwhat خَيرُgood عَيشِthe life of الفَتىthe young man وَالكَأسُand the cup تَصريدُa scant draught
Hubba, through her stinginess, has left my head thirsting.
My love's stinginess has made my resolve collapse
What good is a young man’s life when the cup holds only a scant draught?
Of what good is the life of a youth whose cup is empty?
إِنّيindeed I لَأَحسُدُsurely envy مَولوداًa child مَشىwalked قَدَماًa step

I truly envy a child who has taken a step,
I envy the newborn who walked step by step
While I suffer an illness no child has ever known.
While I have a disease that no newborn has found.
أَرىI see الإِزارَthe waist-wrap عَلىon حُبّىHubba فَأَحسُدُهُso I envy it

I see the waist-wrap on Hubba and envy it;
I see the waist-wrap on my love, and envy it
Indeed, that wrap is envied for what it embraces.
The waist-wrap envelops what is envied.
ياO دامَDam كُنتِyou were لِحاجاتيfor my needs وَصاحِبَتيand my companion

O Dam, you were there for my needs and were my companion,
O friend of my needs and companion
Until I fell ill and sleeplessness stole away sleep.
Until I complained and sleep was disturbed.
قوليtell لِحُبّىto Hubba فَقَدfor indeed أَحبَبتُI loved رُؤيَتَهاseeing her
لَوif كانَthere were ليfor me مِنكِfrom you تَقريبٌa drawing near وَتَبعيدُand a sending away
Tell Hubba—for I have loved the sight of her—
Tell my love I have loved to see her
If you would draw me near and send me away,
If I had any way to bring her close or push away.

My eye would find comfort in you, or we would spend the night hoping
My eye settled upon you, hoping
For bounty, and merriment and graceful women would be sweet.
For intimacy and the sweetness of dalliance.
لاno خَيرَgood فيin عِدَةٍa promise لَيسَتis not بِمُنجَزَةٍfulfilled
فَأَنجِزيso fulfill الوَعدَthe promise إِنَّindeed الجودَgenerosity مَحمودُpraiseworthy
There is no good in a promise left unfulfilled;
No good in a number that is not fulfilled
So fulfill the promise, for generosity is praiseworthy.
So fulfill the promise, generosity is praiseworthy.
لَيسَis not المُحِبُّthe lover كَكَمّونٍlike cumin بِمَزرَعَةٍin a field

إِنif فاتَهُfails it الماءُwater أَغنَتهُsuffices for it المَواعيدُpromises
A lover is not like cumin in a field,
The lover isn't like a farmer with a plantation
Which, if it lacks water, is sustained by promises.
If he misses the water, the promises enrich him.
إِنif لَمnot تَجوديyou bestow بِمَوعودٍwith what was promised فَلاthen do not تَعِديpromise
ماhow أَقبَحَugly الوَعدَthe promise حَتّىuntil زانَهُadorned it الجودُgenerosity
If you will not give what you promised, do not promise.
If you don't grant with a promise, then don't promise
How ugly a promise is until generosity adorns it!
How ugly a promise until generosity adorns it.
سَأَلتُI asked حُبّىHubba فَماbut not عادَتshe gave help عَلىto رَجُلٍa man

I asked Hubba, but she gave no help to a man
I asked my love but she didn't return to a man
Whose tongue is tied against asking people,
Whose tongue from asking people is bound.

As though he were avoiding snakes with gaping mouths.
It's as if she fears snakes lying in wait
No—rather, it is as though I am denied kindness.
No, it's as if I'm forbidden from goodness.
وَالحُرُّand the freeborn man يُعطيكَgives you عَفواًunasked مِنfrom فَواضِلِهِhis surplus

And a freeborn man gives you unasked from his abundance,
The free give you pardon from their excellence
Before you ask; a slave’s bounty is meager.
Before asking, while the slave is driven away.
