أَباO father of أَحمَدٍAhmad طالَgrew long اِنتِظاريmy waiting ثَلاثَةًthree
وَوَعدُكَand your promise داءٌan illness مِثلُlike داءِthe illness of المُبَلسَمِone stricken with delirious fever
O Abu Ahmad, my waiting has dragged on for three [days],
Oh Abu Ahmad, my waiting has been long, threefold
and your promise is an illness like that of one delirious with fever.
And your promise is an affliction, like the affliction of mumps
أَرِحنيrelieve me بِيَأسٍwith loss of hope أَوor بِتَعجيلِby hastening حاجَةٍa request
وَأَيتَyou promised بِهاregarding it لَيسَis not النَدىgenerosity بِمُحَرَّمِforbidden
Relieve me by ending my hopes, or by swiftly granting a request
Relieve me with despair, or with the hastening of a need
you promised to fulfill; generosity is not forbidden.
And bring it, for morning dew is not forbidden
وَإِلاّand if not فَبَيِّنthen make clear لِيto me بِهاconcerning it وَجهَa means of مُخرَجٍescape
كَفىsuffices بِبَيانٍwith a clear indication مِنfrom فَصيحٍan eloquent speaker وَأَعجَمِand an inarticulate speaker
Otherwise, make clear to me a way out of this;
Or else, explain to me through it an avenue of escape
a clear indication suffices, from the eloquent and the inarticulate alike.
Enough explanation from an eloquent one or a mute
وَلاand do not تَكُbe كَالعَذراءِlike a virgin يَومَon the day of نِكاحِهاher marriage
إِذاwhen اِستوذِنَتshe was asked for consent فيregarding نَفسِهاherself لَمdid not تَكلَّمِspeak
And do not be like a virgin on her wedding day,
And do not be like the virgin on her wedding night
who, when asked for her own consent, says nothing.
When she seeks permission within herself, she does not speak
بَداappeared لَكَto you ضَوءُthe light of ماwhat اِحتَجَبَتshe veiled herself عَلَيهِover it
بُدُوَّthe appearing of الشَمسِthe sun مِنthrough خَلَلِgaps in الغَمامِthe clouds
The light of what she kept veiled appeared to you,
The light of what she has hidden herself from has appeared to you
as the sun appears through gaps in the clouds.
Like the rising sun through a break in the clouds
