Malik came in the morning with his reproaches
Tomorrow Malik will blame me
Against me, though he had not been on my mind that night.
For my worries throughout the night
تَناوَلَhe disparaged خَوداًa tender maiden هَضيمَslender of الحَشاthe waist
مِنَamong الحورِthe fair-eyed maidens مَحظوظَةًfavored عالِيَهlofty
He disparaged a tender maiden, slender-waisted,
He embraced a tender, youthful beauty
One of the fair-eyed maidens, favored and lofty.
A highly distinguished Houri
فَقُلتُso I said دَعِleave off اللَومَthe blame فيregarding حُبِّهاlove for her
فَقَبلَكَfor before you أَعيَيتُI exhausted عُذّالِيَهmy reproachers
So I said, "Leave off blaming me for loving her;
I said, "Spare me your blame for loving her"
For before you, I wore out my reproachers."
Before you, I exhausted my blamers
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَكتُمُهُمI surely conceal from them سِرَّهاher secret

غَداةَon the morning when تَقولُshe says لَهاto her الخالِيَهthe carefree woman
And indeed I conceal her secret from them,
And indeed, I conceal her secret
On the morning the carefree woman says to her:
After the old women tell their tales
عُبَيدَةُʿUbayda مالَكِwhat ails you مَسلوبَةًstripped of adornment

"ʿUbayda, why are you stripped of your finery,
Ubaydah, Malik's prisoner
When you once wore a short tunic and jewels?"
You were once distinguished yourself
فَقالَتso she said عَلىin a state of رُقبَةٍapprehension إِنَّنيindeed I

She said apprehensively, "Indeed, I
She said, with her neck in chains, "I
Have pledged my anklet to al-Muraʿʿath
Pawned my anklets for freedom one day
بِمَجلِسِfor a meeting يَومٍa day سَأوفيI shall keep faith بِهِwith it
وَلَوand even if أَجلَبَraise an uproar الناسُthe people أَحوالِيَهaround me
For a day's meeting, which I shall honor,
I will fulfill that promise
Even if the people clamor around me."
Even if people question my affairs"
