أَلاLo! طَرَقَتshe came by night مَوهِناًlate at night مَهدَدُMahdad
وَقَدand already غَوَّرَhad set الكَوكَبُthe star المُنجِدُthe high-rising
Lo, Mahdad came visiting late at night,
Has he not crept humbly while the guiding star has set?
when the high-rising star had already set.
And warriors of battle ignite for him
أَلَمَّتshe visited بِمَلمومَةٍamong a gathered troop كَالقَناlike spears
وَفِتيانِand youths of حَربٍwar لَهُمfor them توقَدُit is kindled
She visited a close-ranked troop, like spears,
He has spent the night vigilantly
and youths of war, which blazes for them.
With the night he wakes without trace
فَبِتُّso I spent the night أُحَيّاbeing greeted بِمَوجودَةٍby a woman present
مَعَwith اللَيلِthe night تُصبِحُshe reaches morning لاnot توجَدُshe is found
So I passed the night greeted by one present
I play with a mad ghoul whom fate directed
with the night, but at morning nowhere to be found.
Chewing at us and importing
أُلاعِبُI play with غولاًa ghoul هَداهُguided it الكَرىsleep
إِلَيناto us تَشُطُّshe strays far وَتَستَورِدُand seeks water
I play with a ghoul that sleep has guided
When I woke and did not find her
to us; she strays afar and seeks the watering place.
I woke with my heart set on her
فَلَمّاso when صَحَوتُI awoke وَلَمand did not أَلقَهاI find her
صَحَوتُI awoke وَقَلبيand my heart بِهاby her مُقصَدُmortally struck
Then, when I awoke and did not find her,
I turn a worry over her crouching
I awoke with my heart mortally struck by her.
And eyes whose flock was sleeplessness
أُقَلِّبُI turn over هَمّاًa grief بِهاfor her جاثِماًweighing heavily
وَعَينَينِand two eyes رِعيَتُهاtheir pasture الفَرقَدُFarqad, a star
I turn over a grief for her that lies heavy,
So what sorrow after the jinniya
and two eyes whose pasture is Farqad.
With necklaces and prostration upon her!
فَياso ah! حَزَناًgrief بَعدَafter جِنِّيَّةٍa jinni woman
عَلَيهاupon her القَلائِدُthe necklaces وَالمِسجَدُand the neck-ornament
Ah, the grief after a jinni woman,
What a liver from which we have no drink
wearing necklaces and a neck-ornament!
And with her I have no hand!
وَياand oh! كَبِداًan aching liver لَيسَnot مِنهاfrom her لَناfor us
نَوالٌa gift وَلاand no عِندَهاwith her ليfor me يَدُclaim of favor
And oh, my aching liver! From her we have no
Except my eyes yearning for her face
gift, nor have I any claim of favor upon her,
And that when she goes I shrivel
سِوىexcept شَوقِthe longing of عَينيmy eye إِلىtoward وَجهِهاher face
وَأَنّيand that I إِذاwhen فارَقَتshe leaves أَكمَدُI pine with grief
except my eye's yearning for her face
I weep from the sickness, the sickness of love
and that I pine in grief whenever she leaves.
For her, and I have no one to make me happy
بَكَيتُI wept مِنَfrom الداءِthe sickness داءِthe sickness of الهَوىlove
إِلَيهاto her وَأَنand because لَيسَnot ليfor me مُسعِدُa companion in grief
I wept from sickness—the sickness of love—
And she promised a prisoner tomorrow
to her, and because none would share my sorrow.
How often did she promise you and not fulfill?
وَقَدand already وَعَدَتshe promised صَفَداًa gift فيin غَدٍtomorrow
وَكَمand how often وَعَدَتكَshe promised you وَلاand not تُصفَدُyou are given a gift
She has promised a gift for tomorrow;
And verily despite her frequent breaking of faith
how often she has promised you, yet you receive nothing!
I hope for loyalty and do not resent
وَإِنّيand I عَلىdespite طولِthe length of إِخلافِهاher promise-breaking
لَأَرجوI surely hope for الوَفاءَfulfillment وَلاand do not أَحقُدُI bear a grudge
And I, despite her long promise-breaking,
If the people break my expectations of her
do hope for fulfillment and bear no grudge.
And she has an appointment tomorrow
إِذاwhen أَخلَفَbelied القَومُthe people ظَنّيmy expectation بِهاof her
وَكانَand there was لَهاfor her فيin غَدٍtomorrow مَوعِدُan appointment
When people belie my hopes of her,
I am patient with the divorce of her signs
and she has an appointment tomorrow,
And the patience of the youth is habitual
صَبَرتُI endured عَلىin the face of طَلقِthe openness of آيايِهاher signs (form uncertain)
حِفاظاًout of loyalty وَصَبرُand the patience of الفَتىa young man أَعوَدُmore beneficial
I endure her freely offered signs,
No day has stinted with the sickness of love
out of loyalty; a young man's patience is more rewarding.
When the morrow gives drink to a lover
وَماand not ضَنَّwithheld يَومٌa day بِداءِthe sickness of الهَوىlove
مُحِبّاًa lover إِذاwhen ماemphasizing particle سَقاهُgave him to drink الغَدُthe morrow
And no day withholds the sickness of love
By an unlucky night, Jumada
from a lover, when the morrow gives it him to drink.
When its wind blows, it chills
وَلَيلَةِand many a night of نَحسٍill fortune جُمادِيَّةٍin Jumada
إِذاwhen نَسَمَتstirred gently ريحُهاits wind تَبرُدُit chills
And on many an ill-starred night of Jumada,
We lodged our guests
whose wind chills whenever it stirs,
Not every day for them is a lodging
أَقَمناwe prepared لِأَضيافِناfor our guests مَرقَداًa resting place
وَماand not كُلُّevery يَومٍday لَهُمfor them مَرقَدُa resting place
we prepared a resting place for our guests,
And verily, when a howler howls
though not every day do they have a resting place.
And my sea roils, frothing
وَإِنّيand I إِذاwhen ماemphasizing particle عَوىhowled نابِحٌa barker
وَجاشَand surged لَهُagainst him بَحرِيَmy sea المُزبِدُthe foaming
And I, whenever a barker howls
I cast curses through which crows suffer
and my foaming sea surges against him,
And chicks, nor are they blissful
لَأَرميI surely hurl نَوافِذَpiercing shafts يَشقىsuffers بِهاby them
فِراخُthe fledglings of اللِئامِthe vile وَلاand do not تَسعَدُfind happiness
surely hurl piercing shafts by which
Ahmmad! You are not of our equals
the fledglings of the vile suffer, finding no joy.
And you are a man they claim brings honor
أَحَمّادُO Hammad لَستَyou are not مِنَamong اَكفائِناour equals
وَأَنتَand you اِمرُؤٌa man زَعَمواthey claimed تَسفِدُyou copulate
O Hammad, you are not our equal;
It amazes and surprises me that I see you speak, O raven
you are a man who, they claim, copulates.
I never reckoned one whose sickness was like yours would speak and not perish
كَفىit suffices عَجَباًas a marvel مُعجِباًastonishing أَنَّنيthat I
أَراكَI see you تَكَلَّمُyou speak ياO عَجرَدُAjrad
It is marvel enough—an astonishing marvel—that I
You sat on the mat after protection
see you speaking, O Ajrad!
And woke up in a grave you excavate
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَحسِبُI thought مَنone who داؤُهُhis sickness
كَدائِكَlike your sickness يَنطِقُspeaks لاnot يُخلِدُstays still
I never thought someone whose sickness
And competed with a people you emulate
was like yours would speak rather than stay still.
How strange is time, it does not run out!
جَلَستَyou sat عَلىupon الخَزِّsilk-and-wool cloth بَعدَafter الحَفاbarefootedness
وَأَصبَحتَand you became فيamong حَفَدٍservants تُحفَدُyou are served
You sat on silk-and-wool cloth after going barefoot,
Why do you not take cover sitting
and now you are among servants, waited upon.
By the genius and gain advantage?
وَنازَعتَand you challenged قَوماًa group of men تُماريهِمُyou dispute with them
فَياthen oh! عَجَبَthe wonder of الدَهرِtime لاnot يَنفَدُruns out
And you challenged men, wrangling with them;
Your father is Shabir, so honor through him
oh, the wonder of time that never ends!
And in your stock is a return for whoever you host
وَماand what لَكَis with you لاnot تَحتَبيyou clasp your knees جالِساًseated
عَلىupon العَبقَرِيِّthe fine carpet وَتَستَوفِدُand summon delegations
And why do you not sit with your knees clasped
Your mother is of women whose concern
upon the fine carpet, summoning delegations?
Is white hair and parted hair that freezes
أَبوكَyour father شَبيرٌShabir فَأَكرِمso how noble بِهِhe is
وَفيand in اِستِكَyour arse وِردٌa watering place لِمَنfor whoever تورِدُyou bring to water
Your father is Shabir—how noble he is!
If asked she would not be miserly
And in your arse is a watering place for those you lead to drink.
But melts and does not freeze
وَأُمُّكَand your mother مِنamong نِسوَةٍwomen هَمُّهُنَّtheir concern
أَشيَبٌa gray-haired man وَمَفرِقُهاand her hair-parting يَجمُدُcongeals
Your mother is one of those women whose concern is
Nights if her home is not visited
a gray-haired man, while her hair-parting congeals.
She remains remembering whom she enshrouds
إِذاwhen سُئِلَتshe is asked لَمnot تَكُنshe was كَزَّةًtight-fisted
وَلَكِنand yet تَذوبُshe melts وَلاand does not تَجمُدُfreeze
When asked, she is never tight-fisted,
When drink presents its vessel
but melts and does not freeze.
You lurked to bow down to their vessel
لَياليnights إِذاwhen لَمnot يُرَدis sought out بَيتُهاher house
أَقامَتshe stayed تَذَكَّرُrecalling مَنwhom تُغمِدُshe sheathes
On nights when her house is not sought out,
And worship a head for which you pray
she stays recalling whom she would sheath.
As for God, you do not worship!
إِذاwhen قَدَّمَbrought forward الشَربُthe drinkers إِبريقَهُمtheir jug
ظَلِلتَyou kept لِإِبريقِهِمbefore their jug تَسجُدُprostrating yourself
When the drinkers bring forward their jug,
You show love for the prophet of guidance
you keep prostrating yourself before their jug.
While you disbelieve in him, you claim
وَتَعبُدُand you worship رَأساًa head تُصَلّيyou pray لَهُto it
وَأَمّاand as for الإِلَهُGod فَلاthen not تَعبُدُyou worship
And you worship a head, praying to it,
And associate on the night of the fasting month
but God you do not worship.
As lawful as the blinkers saw
وَتُظهِرُand you display حُبَّlove for نَبِيِّthe Prophet of الهُدىguidance
وَأَنتَand you بِهِin him كافِرٌan unbeliever تَشهَدُyou bear witness
And you display love for the Prophet of guidance,
Your daughter, you peeled her shell
while, unbelieving in him, you bear witness.
Debauched as the engraver engraves
وَتُشرِكُand you commit idolatry لَيلَةَon a night of شَهرِthe month of الصِيامfasting
حَلالاًas lawful كَماjust as نَظَرَgazed الأَربَدُthe dusky one
You commit idolatry on a night of the fasting month,
And covet the women, contending with them
deeming it lawful, as the dusky one gazed.
While your care is the black snake
وَبِنتُكَand your daughter بَلواas a test (reading uncertain) قَشَرتَyou scraped اِستَهاher arse
مُجوناًout of debauchery كَماas يَنحِتُrasps المِبرَدُthe file
And your daughter—you scraped her arse as a test,
If a glimpse were afforded, you took it
in debauchery, as a file rasps.
As the nude swimmer plunges unfaltering
وَتَغشىand you bed النِساءَwomen تُوازيyou match بِهِنwith them
وَمِنand among هَمِّكَyour concerns الحَيَّةُthe snake الأَسوَدُthe black
And you bed women, keeping abreast of them,
And if it is said “pray” for the call is given
and among your concerns is the black snake.
You hesitated as the cripple hesitates
وَإِنand if سَنَحَappeared الخِشفُthe fawn عارَضتَهُyou intercepted it
كَماas اِندَفَعَsurged forward السابِحُthe galloping horse الأَجرَدُthe sleek
And if a fawn appears, you intercept it,
And if war rose as a curtain
as a sleek galloping horse charges forward.
You sat and goaded whoever sits
وَإِنand if قيلَit is said صَلِّpray! فَقَدfor already أَذَّنواthey called to prayer
زَمَعتَyou trembled كَماas يَزمَعُtrembles المُقعَدُthe cripple
And if told, 'Pray; they have sounded the call,'
And if one day you came to a slip
you tremble as a cripple trembles.
You ate as the ape eats
وَإِنand if قامَتِarose الحَربُwar عَرّاضَةًin full breadth
قَعَدتَyou sat back وَحَرَّضتَand you urged مَنwhoever يَقعُدُsits back
And if war rises in all its breadth,
And if a secret were concealed you spread it
you sit it out and urge others to sit.
A gossip as the hoopoe told
وَإِنand if جِئتَyou came يَوماًone day إِلىto زَلَّةٍa feast
أَكَلتَyou ate كَماas يَأكُلُeats القُرهُدُthe hulking glutton
And if one day you come to a feast,
So you are wretched and you it is
you eat as a hulking glutton eats.
Who by what I have recounted and recount
وَإِنand if كُتِمَwas concealed السِرُّthe secret أَفشَيتَهُyou disclosed it
نَميماًas a tale-bearer كَماas بَلَّغَbrought word الهُدهُدُthe hoopoe
And if a secret is kept, you divulge it,
Will know, if my summer showed itself
as a tale-bearer, as the hoopoe brought word.
Upon you and the singer sang of you
فَأَنتَso you المُشَقّىthe one made wretched وَأَنتَand you الَّذيthe one who
بِماby what قَدalready سَرَدتُI recounted وَماand what أَسرُدُI recount
So you are the one made wretched, and it is you who,
I blame the son of Nahiya for he
by what I have recounted and what I recount,
Loves reclining and does not recline
سَتَعلَمُyou will know لَوif قَدindeed بَداappeared مَيسَميmy brand
عَلَيكَupon you وَغَنّىand sang بِكَabout you المُنشِدُthe reciter
will know, if my brand appears
How can I blame a man for his weakness
upon you and the reciter sings of you.
Feeble from the sickness that is not lost?
أَلومُI reproach اِبنَthe son of نِهياNihya عَلىfor أَنَّهُthe fact that he
يُحِبُّhe loves الرُقودَsleep وَلاand does not يَرقُدُhe sleeps
I reproach Ibn Nihya because he
The son of Nihaya disobeyed me, so be distant from him
loves sleeping, yet does not sleep.
As the knotted snake slithers away
وَكَيفَand how أَلومُI reproach اِمرَأًa man بِاِستِهِin his arse
عَياءٌan incurable affliction مِنَof الداءِdisease لاnot يُفقَدُis absent
And how can I blame a man in whose arse
When he attains great prestige beneath him
is an incurable disease that never goes away?
As the long snake creeps
عَصانِيhe disobeyed me اِبنُthe son of نِهياNihya فَبُعداًso away! لَهُwith him
كَماas بَعِدَwent far away النازِحُthe far-off one الأَعقَدُthe knotted one (sense uncertain)
Ibn Nihya disobeyed me—away with him!
And gives you humiliation when you please him
As the far-off, twisted one went away.
As the lizard cowers before the step
إِذاwhen نالَhe gained جاهاًstatus كَباhe stumbled تَحتَهُbeneath it
كَماas يَزحَفُcrawls الحَيَّةُthe snake الأَربَدُthe dusky
When he gains rank, he stumbles beneath it,
And takes the evil of his brothers
as the dusky snake crawls.
Profiting as the most distant takes
وَيُعطيكَand he gives you ذُلّاًsubmission إِذاwhen رُعتَهُyou frighten him
كَماas ذَلَّyielded لِلقَدَمِto the foot المِربَدُthe date-drying floor
And he submits to you when you frighten him,
You are far that I did not censure his mother
as the date-drying floor yields to the foot.
But as for repeating, it will not be done
وَيَأخُذُand he takes شِرَّةَthe unruly zeal of إِخوانِهِhis brethren
مُفيداًgaining كَماas يَأخُذُtakes الأَبعَدُthe outcast
And he adopts his brethren's unruly zeal,
His twigs have wound in her weakness
profiting, as the outcast takes.
As the peeled wand wound
وَتُبعَدُand it is ruled out أَنthat لَمdid not أَنِكI fuck أُمَّهُhis mother
وَأَمّاand as for المُثَنّىal-Muthanna فَلاthen not يُبعَدُhe is ruled out
And it is ruled out that I did not fuck his mother;
but al-Muthanna is not ruled out:
لَقَدindeed جالَroamed جُردانُهُhis cock فيin اِستِهاher arse
كَماas جالَmoved فيin المُقلَةِthe eyeball المِروَدُthe kohl-stick
indeed, his cock has roamed in her arse,
as the kohl-stick moves within the eye.
