أَلاlisten ياO قَومِmy people خَلّونيleave me وَشَأنيand my affairs
فَلَستُfor I am not بِتارِكٍone who abandons حُبَّlove of الغَوانيbeautiful women
Listen, my people: leave me to my own affairs.
Oh people, leave me be
For I will not abandon the love of beautiful women.
For I'll not abandon loving the beautiful
نَهَونيthey forbade me ياO أُمامَةَUmama عَنfrom هَواكُمlove for you (plural)
فَلَمbut did not أَقبَلI accept مَقالَةَthe words of مَنwhoever نَهانيforbade me
They forbade me, O Umama, from loving you.
They warned me, O Umamah, against your love
But I did not accept the words of whoever forbade me.
Yet I did not accept the words of those who warned me
فَإِنso if لَمnot تَسعَديyou make happy فَعِديthen promise وَمُنّيand give hope
خَلاعاًwith abandon (uncertain wording) لاnot أَموتُI die عَلىin بَيانِclarity
So if you will not make me happy, then promise me and give me hope,
If you won't make me happy, then promise and favor me
With abandon, so I do not die knowing the truth.
Sincerely, lest I die in agony
