نورَlight عَينيmy eye أَصَبتِyou afflicted عَينيmy eye بِسَكبِwith streaming tears
يَومَon the day فارَقتِنيyou parted from me عَلىfor غَيرِno ذَنبِfault
Light of my eye, you afflicted my eye with streaming tears
O light of my eyes, my eyes have been afflicted with pouring
On the day you left me, though I had done no wrong.
On the day you left me for no sin
كَيفَhow لَمdid not تَذكُريyou remember المَواثيقَthe solemn pledges وَالعَهand the covenant (first part)
دَcompletion of 'covenant' وَماand what قُلتِyou said ليto me وَقُلتِand you said لِصَحبيto my companions
How could you forget the solemn pledges and the covenant,
How could you forget the covenants and promises
And what you said to me and said to my companions?
And what you told me and told my friends
ماnot تَصَبَّرتُI tried to be patient عَنaway from لِقائِكِmeeting you إِلّاexcept that
قَلَّdwindled صَبريmy patience وَباشَرَand touched المَوتُdeath قَلبيmy heart
Whenever I tried to bear not seeing you,
I did not give up hope of seeing you again
My patience dwindled, and death touched my heart.
Except my patience ran out and death took hold of my heart
لَيتَنيif only I مِتُّI had died قَبلَbefore حُبِّكِloving you ياO قُرdelight (first part)
رَةَcompletion of 'delight' عَينيmy eye أَوor عِشتُI had lived فيin غَيرِother than حُبِّlove
Would that I had died before loving you, O delight
I wish I had died before loving you, O delight of my eye
Of my eye, or had lived without love.
Or lived without loving you
لَيسَthere is not شَيءٌanything أَجَلَّgreater مِنthan فُرقَةِseparation from النَفthe soul (first part)
سِcompletion of 'the soul' فَحَسبيso enough for me فُجِعتُI was bereaved بِالنَفسِof the soul حَسبيenough for me
Nothing is graver than parting with the soul;
Nothing is more painful than the soul’s separation
So enough for me—I have been bereft of my soul, enough.
So my affliction for the soul is enough
كَيفَhow عَيشيmy life وَماand not نَعودُwe return كَماas كنwere (first part of 'we were')
ناwe (completion of 'we were') إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشتَكيI complain جَهدَseverity of كَربيmy anguish
How can I live, when we cannot return to how we
How can I live when we will not be as we were
Were? To God I complain of my overwhelming anguish.
To God I complain of the hardship of my distress
فَرَغَfinished الناسُthe people مِنwith مُعالَجَةِdealing with الناthe people (first part)

سِcompletion of 'the people' جَميعاًall وَأَنتِand you هَمّيmy concern وَرَبّيby my Lord (oath)
People have finished dealing with other people,
People have given up on healing souls altogether
All of them; and you are my concern, by my Lord.
While you are my care and my Lord
