إِنَّindeed الَّتيshe who زَعَمَتshe claimed فُؤادَكَyour heart مَلَّهاgrew weary of her
خُلِقَتshe was created هَواكَyour love كَماjust as خُلِقتَyou were created هَوىًa love لَهاfor her
Indeed, she who claimed your heart had grown weary of her
The one who captured your heart as her own
Was created to be your love, just as you were created to be hers.
Was created to be loved by you as you were created to love her
بَيضاءُfair-skinned باكَرَهاcame to her early النَعيمُluxury فَصاغَهاand so fashioned her
بِلُبانَةٍwith desire فَأَرَقَّهاso made her delicate وَأَجَلَّهاand made her majestic
Fair-skinned, luxury came to her early and fashioned her
Fair and innocent in the bliss of her youth so she was formed
With desire, making her delicate and majestic.
With smoothness, thus she softened and gentled you
حَجَبَتshe withheld تَحِيَّتَهاher greeting فَقُلتُso I said لِصاحِبيto my companion
ماhow كانَwas أَكثَرَهاplentiful it was لَناfor us وَأَقَلَّهاand how scant it was
She withheld her greeting, so I said to my companion:
She veiled her greeting so I said to my companion
How plentiful it was for us—and how scant!
She was never much ours and but little hers
وَإِذاand whenever وَجَدتُI found لَهاconcerning her وَساوِسَwhisperings سَلوَةٍforgetting a beloved
شَفَعَinterceded الضَميرُthe inner self لَهاfor her إِليَّwith me فَسَلَّهاand so plucked them out
And whenever I sensed whispers of forgetting her,
And when I found in her the whispers of temptation
My inner self interceded with me for her and plucked them out.
My conscience interceded for her with me so I forgave her
