Has the site of a long-deserted dwelling stirred your longing,
Your love haunts me like an eternal home,
and the import of an early visitor's talk as he revisits it,
And the morning visitor's talk intoxicates me.

A flask at my basin as if it contains
fixed tattoo marks, or tattoos upon a hand?
Truths of tattoos or inscriptions on a hand.

Whenever my eye sees it after deprivation
its tears flow like scattered pearls.
My tears flow like scattered pearls.

It is as though the gray doves perched in the dwelling
As if doves scribbled mourning inscriptions
were a bereaved woman's gatherings of weepers and visiting mourners.
On the house's wall, mourning my bereavement.

I recalled there the three women's gait, and back to me came
When I walked like the three, renewed was
renewed love—and death lies in its renewal.
My passion and death in the ever-renewed.

And my friend said, "She has passed away
so save some of your love for another, and be sensible.'
So keep your love for another and guide me."

So I told him, 'No ear remains for anyone who would listen;
I said to him, "No ear remains for a hearer,
and reproach is only madness in you—so be measured.'
And the blame is only madness, so aim precisely."

She may depart to one not her usual place.

O Abu Karib, Hubba has not grown distant;
Abu Karib, she has not touched my distant love,
for Hubba's heart is not estranged from your brother.
So my heart has not been estranged from your brother.

And the guide of neighborhood and clan departed,

O her beauty! Were it not for the eyes
when sent one day, puts it off until tomorrow.
Which if unleashed one day would lead to the morrow!

Peace from me upon al-Ghazla; how often
Peace to the shapely one from me, and perhaps
I was alone with her, away from everyone, in a dewy clearing.
I conversed with her, safe from a critic in private.

Ghayth has three women; he never lets suspicion go.
For a rain of three that does not quit doubt
They remained chaste; I do not overstep, nor am I kept away.
I have kept my chastity and do not beg and am no outcast.

An apparition that visits me has increased
and the sound of song from a warbling drinking companion,
My passion, and the singing voice of a warbling companion.

And the length of lovers meeting, and a refuge
where you awe the drinking companions around it, then sleep.
Where the remorseful slumber around it, then slumber.

Large-eyed wild cows walked there, as though they were
The eyes of the deer walked by it as though they are
troops of maidens in striped white garments.
Maidens' wrists in white polished smooth.

Fool of Quraysh! Do not let the wishes

Misguide you to an error―you have attained your goal, so withdraw!

Echoes satisfy you with kingdom so you envy them,
and for diversion and play, listening alone suffices you.
And listening to music and owning slave girls are enough for you.

Fool of Quraysh! You owe no dread
nor have you any superiority over slave women and men.
Nor do you have a merit above slave women, so worship!

If you stand up you will not succeed, and if you promise,
are furtive schemes behind the imam invested with authority.
The wishes will flee behind the followed leader.

And were it not for Commander of Believers Muhammad,
you would have returned, cast aside, in the shade of a bare palace.
You would have returned bare inside a ruined palace.

Do not forget the Caliph’s favor after he settled you

In a lofty, well-built palace.

Be patiently content without Ahmad’s caliphate
and eat at ease of what you have sun-dried, and sleep.
And live in ease with what you have acquired and sleep!

And you march shaking the spear, they will say, “Withdraw!”

Do you not see that the caliphate is free
and that among the clan you are unsupported?
And that you, beside the living, are not supported?

The Mahdi of Muhammad's house will take care of her for you;
Al-Mahdi, the family of Muhammad, will suffice it―
he took possession of her from a father who was no laggard.
A hero who gave the world away like travelling supplies.

A man who was generous with the faith of the supported prophet
while the faith of the aided Prophet was jealously guarded.
And miserly toward a creed of an unsupported man.

So let the terrified bird fly away or fall, for it only
to a king whose inheritance is from Muhammad has she come.
Came to a king whose inheritance is from Muhammad.
