From the one renowned for love

    To the hard-hearted one,

The peace of God, Lord of the Throne,

Be upon your face, O my love.

    And now, O delight

Of my eye and the desires of my heart,

And O my soul, which dwells

[Unclear fragments] between one flank and the other,

I have indeed found strange, O ʿAbda,

    Your coldness in your letters.

Is it for a sin? No, by God,

    I have committed no sin.

And no, by God, there is not in the East

A woman, nor in the West,

Whom I love today other than you,

    In earnest or in play.
