لَمdid not يَدرِunderstand ماwhat قُلتُI said مَسعودٌMasʿūd فَضَيَّعَهُso he wasted it
ياO سَوأَتاmy shame! مِنfor طِلابيmy seeking جودَgenerosity مَسعودِMasʿūd
Masʿūd did not grasp what I said, so he let it go to waste.
Masʿūd did not understand what I said, and so let it go to waste.
Oh, the shame of my seeking Masʿūd’s bounty!
Oh, my shame for seeking Masʿūd’s generosity!
وَقائِلٍand one asking كَيفَhow مَسعودٌMasʿūd فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him
هُوَhe الجَوادُthe generous one وَلَكِنand yet فاسِقُdebauched الجودِin generosity
And to one who said to me, “What is Masʿūd like?” I replied:
And to one who asked, “What is Masʿūd like?” I said:
He is munificent—but wanton in his giving:
He is generous, yet debauched in his generosity:
غَيثُrain الزَوانيharlots إِذاwhen أَمسىhe spends the evening بِعَقوَتِهِin his courtyard
وَآفَةُand the ruin المالِof wealth بَينَbetween الزِقِّthe wineskin وَالعودِand the lute
a raincloud for harlots when he passes the evening in his courtyard,
Rain for harlots when he spends the evening in his courtyard,
and the ruin of wealth, between the wineskin and the lute.
And the ruin of wealth between the wineskin and the lute.
