O ʿAbd, my endurance fails through love of you,

and longing for you is a cleft in my liver.

Indeed, I swore an oath that proved true

in the forecourt of the house of the One, the Self-Sufficient:

you have indeed left me lovesick with love of you,

and slain me unjustly, without blood-requital.

Of my heart you left only its last remnant of life,

and made your dwelling between soul and body.

Has the time not come for you, O ʿUbayda, to

heal a brother of sorrows and anguish?

He meets evening and morning, lost in love for you,

and is overwhelmed by terror and sleeplessness.

    ما إِن يُرَجّى بَعدُ مِن أَحَدِ

    We look to ʿUbayda to be generous to us;

no longer is anything hoped for from anyone else.

I was smitten with her, fair-skinned and soft,

neither short of stature nor excessively tall.

And she shows you the eyes of a startled oryx calf

in the meadow, not kohled to treat sore eyes:

dark at the tear ducts, with a figure adorned

by robes of silk, ever swaying.

Like bitter cold that comes in summertime,

and what an embracing lover craves on a frosty night.

Her form is perfect from chest to foot,

and fully formed from shin to upper arm.

And when you look, you find the hope she offers

is the water of entreaty; you find nothing else.

Tell her, you two: I have never looked out

without watchers' eyes standing between me and you.

My soul and my household be your ransom,

and my kin, after my wealth and children.
