ياO طيبَfragrance عَبدَةَʿAbda وَيليwoe to me مِنكَbecause of you ياO طيبيmy fragrance
قَطَّعتَyou have torn apart قَلبيmy heart بِشَوقٍwith longing غَيرَwithout تَعتيبِreproach
O fragrance of ʿAbda, woe is me because of you, O my fragrance!
You have torn my heart with longing, without reproach.
قُلsay لِلَّتيto her who نَفسُهاher soul نَفسيmy soul وَماyet not شَعَرَتshe realized
مُنّيbestow عَلَيَّupon me بِنَومٍwith sleep مِنكِfrom you مَوهوبِbestowed
Tell her whose soul is my soul, though she knows it not:
Bestow on me some sleep, a gift from you.
إِنَّindeed الرَسولَthe messenger الَّذيwhom أَرسَلتِyou sent غادَرَنيleft me
بِغُلَّةٍwith burning thirst مِثلِlike حَرِّheat النارِthe fire مَشبوبِkindled
Indeed, the messenger you sent has left me
With burning thirst like the heat of a blazing fire.
أُساوِرُI wrestle with اللَيلَthe night تَحتَbeneath الهَمِّsorrow مُجتَنِحاًbent over
مِنbecause of طولِthe length of صَفحِكِyour turning away عَنّيfrom me فيamid أَعاجيبِstrange things
I wrestle with the night, bent beneath sorrow,
In strange states brought on by your long turning away from me.
كَأَنَّas though بيupon me مِنكِfrom you طَبّاًa spell لاnot يُفارِقُنيleaves me
وَإِنand though غَدَوتُI go about صَحيحاًhealthy غَيرَnot مَطبوبِbewitched
As though a spell from you were upon me, never leaving me,
Though I go about healthy and unbewitched.
لقَدindeed ذَكَرتُكِI remembered you وَالفَوقانُand the hiccups يَأخُذُنيseize me
وَماand not نَسيتُكِI forgot you بَينَbetween الكَأسِthe winecup وَالكوبِand the goblet
Indeed, I remembered you while hiccups seized me,
Nor did I forget you between winecup and goblet.
وَقائِلٍand a speaker إِذwhen رَأىhe saw شَوقيmy longing وَصَفحَكُمُand your neglect
دَعهاleave her فَماfor nothing لَكَfor you مِنهاfrom her غَيرُexcept تَنصيبِweariness
And someone who saw my longing and your neglect said:
Leave her; from her you get nothing but weariness.
لاno شَيءَthing أَبعَدُfarther مِمّاthan what لَستَyou are not نائِلَهُattaining it
إِنَّindeed البَخيلَthe miser بَعيدٌdistant غَيرُnot مَقروبِapproached
Nothing is farther away than what you cannot attain.
The miser is far away and unapproachable.
فَقُلتُso I said كَلّاno سَيَجزيwill repay مَنwhoever لَهُhe has كَرَمٌgenerosity
شَوقاًlonging بِشَوقٍwith longing وَتَقريباًand closeness بِتَقريبِwith closeness
So I said: No! Whoever is generous will repay
Longing with longing, and closeness with closeness.
يَهُزُّنيunsettle me الناسُpeople مِنfrom among واشٍa slanderer وَمُنتَصِحٍand a well-wisher
وَاللَيثُand the lion يُفرَسُis preyed upon بَينَbetween الكَلبِthe dog وَالذيبِand the wolf
People unsettle me, slanderers and well-wishers alike;
Even the lion is torn apart between dog and wolf.
لاno خَيرَgood فيin العَيشِlife إِنif لَمnot تُقضَis fulfilled حاجَتُناour need
مِمّاof what نُحِبُّwe love عَلىin رَغمِspite of الأَقاريبِkinsfolk
There is no good in life unless our need is met
With what we love, in spite of our kinsfolk.
يَزيدُincreases فيin الداءِthe sickness مَنone who تُقلىis loathed زِيارَتُهُhis visit
إِذاwhen اِلتَقَيناwe meet وَشافٍand a healer كُلُّevery مَحبوبِbeloved
One whose visit is loathed makes the sickness worse
When we meet; every beloved is a healer.
ياO عَبدَʿAbda (shortened) حَتّامَuntil when لاnot أَلقاكِI meet you خالِيَةًalone
وَلاand not أَنامُI sleep لَقَدindeed طَوَّلتِyou have prolonged تَعذيبيmy torment
O ʿAbda, how long must I go without meeting you alone,
And without sleep? You have prolonged my torment.
أَهدَيتِyou gave as a gift ليto me الطيبَperfume فيin رَيحانِsweet basil ساحِرَةٍan enchantress
ياO عَبدَʿAbda (shortened) ريقُكِyour saliva أَشهىmore enticing ليto me مِنَthan الطيبِperfume
You gave me perfume in an enchantress's sweet basil;
O ʿAbda, your saliva is more enticing to me than perfume.
أَهديgive as a gift لَناto us شُربَةًa draught مِنهُof it نَعيشُwe live بِهاby it
إِنif كُنتِyou are مُهدِيَةًoffering رَوحاًrelief لِمَكروبِto one distressed
Give us a draught of it, that we may live by it,
If you would bring relief to one in anguish.
إِنَّindeed البَغيضَthe detested one إِلَيناto us لاnot نُطالِبُهُwe ask him for
ذاكَthat الهَوىlove وَحَبيبٌand beloved كُلُّevery مَطلوبِone sought
Indeed, we do not ask one we detest
For such love; everyone sought is beloved.
أَمّاas for النِساءُwomen فَإِنّيfor indeed I لاnot أَعيجُpay heed بِهاto them
قَدindeed صُمتُI have fasted عَنهاfrom them بِنَحبٍby a vow مِنكِfor your sake مَنحوبِsolemnly vowed
As for women, I pay them no heed;
I have fasted from them by a solemn vow made for your sake.
أَنتِyou الَّتيshe who تَشتَفيfinds healing عَينيmy eye بِرُؤيَتِهاin seeing her
وَهُنَّand they عِنديto me كَماءٍlike water غَيرَnot مَشروبِdrunk
You are she at whose sight my eye finds healing,
While they, to me, are like water left undrunk.
وَفيand among المُحِبّينَlovers صَبُّa lovesick man لاno شِفاءَcure لَهُfor him
دونَshort of الرِضىsatisfaction بَينَbetween مَرشوفٍwhat is sipped وَمَصبوبِand what is poured
And among lovers is a lovesick man who has no cure
Short of satisfaction, between what is sipped and what is poured.
إِنّيindeed I وَإِنand though كُنتُI am حَمّالاًlong-suffering أُجاوِرُهُI live beside him
صَرّامُone who firmly severs حَبلِthe cord of التَمَنّيwishful hope بِالأَكاذيبِthrough lies
I, though long-suffering while living beside him,
Am quick to cut the cord of hopes sustained by lies.
لاnot يَخرُجُcomes forth الحَمدُpraise مِنّيfrom me قَبلَbefore تَجرُبَةٍa trial
وَلاnor أَكونُI become أُجاجاًbitterly salty بَعدَafter تَجريبِtesting
Praise does not come from me before a trial,
Nor do I turn to bitter brine after being tested.
