Long have lasted my reproaches to Hind,

    my yearning and my pursuit,

    and my visits every day,

    for promises full of lies.

Whenever I came for a tryst,

it was an evening of loss.

She broke her promise when sought,

as a mirage fails its promise.

    Yazid reproached me over her,

and was harsh, unlike my companions.

I said to him who blamed me over her—

may he choke on his drink because of her—

You shall never be obeyed concerning

what has afflicted me, even for kinship's sake.

Would that whoever reproached a lover

    and assailed him with disparagement—

    ما لِهِندٍ مِن مَتابِ

    Hind has worn down my life;

    Hind shows no repentance—

might be struck by God with sickness,

    all-consuming, or with torment.

She ensnared me with her promises,

and her spells, then her beguilement.

How can she not pity a man

    with wandering heart, afflicted,

wasting away for love of Hind,

    given to lament and sobbing?

    Love for Hind entered

    his heart through every door.

Would that I had a bow and arrows

    when my bubbling passion swells,

so I might strike her heart

with keen arrows, true to their mark,

from the arrows of love; indeed, I

    long for her, for love.

    Indeed she enslaved my heart

by turning away and shunning me,

the day she rose and swayed gracefully,

in a sleeveless tunic and scented necklace.

    The loveliest of all people,

unveiled or in a face veil,

she was perfect in beauty to the eye,

and in loveliness in her clothes.

    Remember a night we dallied

    amid thunderclaps and clouds,

    في عَفافٍ وَتَصابي

    and the talk we cherished

    in chastity and youthful dalliance;

and a messenger who journeyed through the night,

for love of you, carrying the letter,

    warning the lover—until

    they raised their spearpoints—

of an enemy we guarded against,

    and angry paternal cousins.

She visited my love by night with grief

that nearly made me forget my return.

And she sought to entice me, despite the terror,

    with the plague of youth,

the day she spoke, fearing the watching eye

for the woman behind the veil:

Be a crow when you come

among us, or like a crow,

wary of watching eyes; for we

have never been people of disgrace.

So I came on my own

    toward her, without my kinsmen.

    Then we met in conversation

    of complaint and reproach:

words from her and from me,

    but no outright abuse.

I said, when she tormented me,

This was not what I expected.

Where I placed my hopes in you, you dealt

your visitor the lash of torment.

    Would that, before loving you,

I had been in the belly of the earth.

    Then Hind wept and said,

My love, do not resent my words:

    harshness after meeting

is followed by gentleness in reply.
