بَعَثتُI sent forth بِذِكرِهاwith mention of her شِعريmy verse
وَقَدَّمتُand I set الهَوىlove شَرَكاas a snare
I sent forth my verse, speaking of her,
And set love as a snare.
فَلَمّاthen when شاقَهاstirred her longing قَوليmy words
وَشَبَّand grew الحُبُّlove فَاِحتُنِكاthen matured
Then, when my words stirred her longing,
And love grew, then came of age,
أَتَتنيshe came to me الشَمسُthe sun زائِرَةًas a visitor
وَلَمand not تَكُshe was تَبرَحُleaving الفَلَكاthe celestial sphere
The sun came to visit me,
Though she had never left the celestial sphere.
تَقولُshe says وَقَدand already خَلَوتُI was alone بِهاwith her
تَكَلَّمspeak وَاِكفِنيand spare me يَدَكاyour hand
She said, once I was alone with her:
"Speak, and keep your hand off me."
وَجَدتُI found العَيشَlife فيin سُعدىSuʿdā
وَكانَand was العَيشُlife قَدalready هَلَكاperished
I found life in Suʿdā,
Though life had already perished.
