وَصاحِبٍand a companion نافِعٍuseful ليto me طولُthroughout صُحبَتِهِhis companionship
وَصاحِبٍ نافِعٍ لي طولُ صُحبَتِهِ
لاnot يَنفَعُdoes any good الدَهرَever إِلّاexcept وَهوَwhile he is مَحمومُfeverish
لا يَنفَعُ الدَهرَ إِلّا وَهوَ مَحمومُ
Many a companion whose long companionship benefits me—
And a companion, useful to me throughout our friendship,
He is never of any use except when feverish.
never does any good unless he is feverish.
تَأتيكَcome to you فيduring نافِضِthe shivering of الحُمّىthe fever مَكارِمُهُhis generous deeds
تَأتيكَ في نافِضِ الحُمّى مَكارِمُهُ
وَإِنand if أَفاقَhe recovers بَداappears فيon وَجهِهِhis face اللومُreproach
وَإِن أَفاقَ بَدا في وَجهِهِ اللومُ
His acts of generosity come to you in the fever’s shivering fit;
His generous deeds reach you amid the fever’s shivering;
But once he recovers, reproach shows upon his face.
and if he recovers, reproach appears on his face.
