غَلِطَerred الفَتىthe young man فيin قَولِهِhis saying
مَنwhoever لاdoes not يُرِدكَwant you فَلاthen do not تَرُدهُwant him
The young man erred in saying:
“Whoever does not want you, do not want him.”
مَنwhoever ناقَشَcalls to strict account الإِخوانَthe friends لَمdoes not
يُبدِexpress العِتابَreproach وَلَمand does not يُعِدهrepeat it
Whoever calls his friends to strict account neither
voices reproach nor repeats it.
عاتِبadmonish أَخاكَyour brother إِذاwhen هَفاhe errs
وَاِعطِفand turn kindly بِوُدِّكَwith your affection وَاستَفِدهand win him over
Admonish your brother when he errs,
and turn to him with affection, and win him over.
وَإِذاand if أَتاكَcomes to you بِعَيبِهِwith his fault
واشٍa talebearer فَقُلthen say لَمdid not يَعتَمِدهintend it
And if there comes to you with news of his fault
a talebearer, then say, “He did not intend it.”
وَإِذاand if جَزَيتَyou repay أَخاًa brother بِذَfor a misdeed (broken word)
بٍmisdeed (broken-word continuation) كانَwas مِنهُfrom him لَمnot تَسُدَهsurpass him
And if you repay a brother for a misdeed
he committed, you have not proved his better.
وَلَقَلَّand indeed seldom ماparticle completing “seldom” طَلَبَseeks الفَتىthe young man
لِأَخيهِin his brother عَيباًa fault لَمnot يَجِدهfind it
And seldom does a young man seek
a fault in his brother and fail to find it.
