Listen: I find nothing sweeter than a promise,

Or hope in it, even when it brings no benefit,

Or the slanderer's inattention when I visit her,

Or gazing at her dwellings as I sit alone,

Or a bout of weeping at our meeting, then a laugh—

Both sweeter than water mixed with honey.

When she gives me hope of meeting her, it is as though

I were answering a summons to the Garden of Eternity.

I count the hours for her, until it seems

I see her face—no, rather, they conjure it before me.

And if she breaks her promise, my heart flutters at her deeds

With yearning, and my skin shudders for her.

I spend the night as though suspended among the stars,

Asking their middlemost about the solitary star.

A fair woman among the fair, with enchanting eyes

And complexion, has begun to lead astray, not guide.

Love shot at me from her eye and struck me,

Leaving me worn down by longing for her.

I wrestle with a soul that has stripped for combat in love,

To throw me down, until I retreat into cold restraint.

Among the misfortunes of the days is that love has bound me

To a woman lavish in praise but scant in favors.

I find myself close to what she desires, yet I see

No approach from her, in jest or earnest.

God bless the woman of Malik, when she inclines

To pleasure, or points the way to sound judgment.

A finely formed beauty, a sudden wonder to the eye,

She walks like the sun, in sash and necklace.

I shall seek her nearness through my noble qualities,

And through affection, if she remains constant in affection.

My patron has reproached me over her, though he only

Reproaches me for a dark-eyed beauty whose cheek is a marvel.

I said to him, 'Less reproach! Indeed, I

See moderation, but have no way to attain it.'

My heart is like a bird whose time to drink has come,

Beating its wings to fly toward water.

Out of love for her, I weep to her with yearning,

And through her encounter sorrows, troop upon troop.

At evening my eye is choked with its tears,

And at dawn my innards flutter with longing.

I was told she said aloud to her sister,

'Listen: my soul is with him whose spirit is with me.'

By God, I do not know: was she seeking someone other than me

With those words she sent, or was I her aim?

And many a gathering of five I have left for love of her,

And they were like garden blossoms or pearls upon a string.

They let fall, for the ladies' man devoted to dalliance,

Talk like a mantle's embroidery, enticing him to drink.

It is as though my hope, after she has kept it waiting,

Were on an ibex among the peaks, or on a mountain of bare rock.

When I come near she draws away; she approaches when she draws near,

Bringing youth's fresh bloom to bear against unyielding rock.

Oh, how strange is Su'da when close at hand,

And her nearness in distance—alas for distance!

Oh, what sickness to lose the beloved when he goes far away,

And seeing him in sleep is deadlier than loss.
