Have you forsaken ʿAbda, or has a journey kept you away?

No, rather, you visit her people and circle round.

The one who spoke of me claimed my love was slight,

yet parting from him is a great calamity to me.

May my father, my mother, and all the clan be ransom for

that person there, whose bedfellow is bewildered.

One whose eye, when it mingles with mine,

makes the ascetics swear that I am bewitched.

O friend, reveal your brother’s love and make it known,

if your way should take you past the beloved.

Beyond you, love holds for him no

hardship; and without you there is no ease.

How could you harbor suspicions of him, when his heart,

O ʿAbda, is submerged in the deep seas of love?

If you said, “Desist,” his heart would hold back from you,

and a harbinger of resignation would appear upon him.

Then he draws near to bring his eye its joy,

and nearness to the one who cleft the heart is joy.

A lover is indeed entitled to delight in his beloved

and to tire of one in whom he finds no pleasure.

How long will you keep his love for yourself,

    while the man endures—patient indeed?

O ʿUbayda, will you not take vengeance on a youth

whose healing charms are spent and whose sickness is unavenged?

Through love of you, his death hastens before its day,

unless a protector shelters him from love of you.

    فِإِلى المَماتِ بِما لَقيتُ أَصيرُ

    Do not buy my death with love of you;

for, through what I have suffered, I am headed for death.

Sorrow binds me to love of you; as for death,

my knowledge of it is that it is decreed.

Youth’s course kept driving me and my longing on,

until I came to you, when eyes were red.

So the eye, when I seek to forsake you, is a marvel,

and over my heart is a ruler born of love for you.

A heart I soothe when passion runs wild,

then it flies toward you, or almost flies.

I am, though my steps fall short, far indeed

from shunning your house; it is another that is shunned.

Except for a lover’s tarrying or his nearness,

through love; he has no vows binding you.

The heart went to ʿUbayda, after

its landmarks had faded, and few knew them.

Indeed I enlighten it, to my own hurt; it may see

my counsel, know its proper course, yet stray.

Wonder enough for you is its shunning the right path

and pursuing what you desire, though you see clearly.

ʿUbayda said, when I asked a little of her

and longed for it—for her greater favors are forbidden—

“Do you not know—and you are no fool—

that little added to little makes much?”

So I laughed in wonder and said to my companion,

“Shroud your brother, for he is buried.”
