لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed هَذَّبتُI refined قَوليmy speech وَلَمand did not أَدَعleave
لَعَمري لَقَد هَذَّبتُ قَولي وَلَم أَدَع
مَقالاًanything to say لِمُغتابٍfor a backbiter وَدَعوىand a claim لِمَنfor whoever لَحاcensured
مَقالاً لِمُغتابٍ وَدَعوى لِمَن لَحا
By my life, I have indeed refined my speech and left no
opening for a backbiter, nor a claim for anyone who censures.
وَمَنand whoever كانَis ذاpossessed of فَهمٍunderstanding بَليدٍdull وَعَقلُهُand his mind
وَمَن كانَ ذا فَهمٍ بَليدٍ وَعَقلُهُ
بِهِin it عِلَّةٌa defect عابَfound fault with الكَلامَthe speech المُنَقَّحاpolished
بِهِ عِلَّةٌ عابَ الكَلامَ المُنَقَّحا
And anyone whose understanding is dull and whose mind
is impaired finds fault with polished speech.
