فَياso, O حَزَناsorrow! هَلّاif only بِناupon us كانَhad been ماwhat بِهِwas upon him
مِنَout of الوُدِّlove إِذas تَبكيweep عَلَيهِover him قَرائِبُهhis kinswomen
Oh, sorrow! Would that his plight had been ours,
Out of love, as his kinswomen weep over him.
وَمَمسوكَةٍand a musk-scented one عَذراءَa virgin يَحمِلُهاcarries her فَتىًa youth
وَلَمand did not تَعيَgrow weary كَفّاهُhis two palms وَلَمand did not يَدمَbleed غارِبُهhis withers
And a musk-scented virgin, carried by a youth,
Whose palms did not tire, nor did his withers bleed.
أَتَتنيshe came to me بِهاwith her رَوّاقَةٌa persuasive saleswoman فيin نَفاقِهاher sale
لِتُخبِرَنيto tell me عَنof شاهِدٍone present لاnot أَقارِبُهI approach him
A persuasive saleswoman brought her to me, peddling her,
To tell me of one present whom I do not approach.
خَلَوتُI was alone بِهاwith her يَوماًone day فَلَمّاand when اِفتَضَضتُهاI deflowered her
تَبَيَّنَbecame clear ماwhat فيهاwas in her وَصَرَّحَand spoke plainly عائِبُهhis critic
I was alone with her one day, and when I deflowered her,
What she held became clear, and his critic spoke plainly.
وَقالَand he said بِماwith what قَالَsaid المُحِبُّthe loving one نَصاحَةًin sincere counsel
وَهَلand would? يَكذِبُlie to الصَبَّthe lovesick one المُحِبَّthe loving one حَبائِبُهhis beloved ones
And he spoke as a lover speaks, in sincere counsel—
Would his beloved ones lie to a lovesick lover?
I seek protection for you بِالرَحمَنِwith the All-Merciful مِنfrom دَحسِthe scheming of حاسِدٍan envier

I seek the All-Merciful’s protection for you from an envier’s scheming:
You sleep, while his scorpions do not sleep at night.
عَلَيكَover you سَماءٌa sky دونَناapart from us تُمطِرُrains down الرَدىdeath

Above you, but not us, a sky rains death,
And an adept’s fury—his claws have not been clipped.
فَلاso let not يَأتِناcome to us مِنكَfrom you الحَديثُtalk لَذاذَةًfor pleasure

So let no talk come to us from you for pleasure,
Because of onslaughts whose rider is not safe from terror.
فَلِلَّهِso, to God! مَحزونٌa grieving man يَروضُtrains هُمومَهُhis cares
عَلىfor فَتكَةٍa deadly assault وَالفَتكُand deadly assault صَعبٌdifficult مَراكِبُهits mounts
How wondrous, by God, the grieving man who schools his cares
For a deadly assault—and deadly assault has mounts hard to ride.
إِذاwhen هَمَّhe resolves لَمnot يَرضَhe accepts الهُوَينىthe easy way وَلَمand not يَكُنhe is
كَليلاًblunted كَسَيفِlike a sword of السوءِpoor quality تَنبوglance off مَضارِبُهits striking edges
When he resolves, he will not accept the easy way, nor is he
Blunted like a worthless sword whose striking edges glance off.
