    O longing of one who spends the night love-stricken and shunned!

    And O his yearning, whether he is rebuffed or comes near!

    Carefree, the women who knew no love slept,

    while I spent the night composing verse in darkness, dejected.

    And many a speaker, kept well by avoiding my sickness,

    has met no marvel, yet marvels if you tell him one:

    Why do I see you with no desire for play?

    I said: Whoever finds his eye soothed by love may play.

    فَاِشرَب هَنيئاً عَلى الرَيحانِ مُغتَصِبا

    I am now too preoccupied for your radiant cup;

    so drink with pleasure over the sweet basil, snatching your draught.

    فَاِستَأنِ لا يَسبِقُ العَجلانُ ما طَلَبا

    Do not hasten fate, whose time is ordained;

    so take your time: the hasty man cannot outstrip what he seeks.

    Love has contended with my heart; then it was overtaken

    by a lover's weakness, and the heart lay vanquished.

    What way is there to pleasure, when she has left—

    Su'da—scars upon my liver through love of her?

    A gazelle who robbed a lion with her eye!

    Never have I seen such a victim and despoiler as today.

    O glance that tethered Salma within his eye!

    And still a mote remains lodged in his eye.

    She draws near in remembrance as an image when far away,

    until I see her form drawing close within my eye.

    Indeed, beautiful women satisfy no request,

    nor will you see plunder like what they steal from us.

    ياقَلبُ كُلُّ اِمرِئٍ رَهنٌ بِما اِكتَسَبا

    Leave them to the prodigal whose way to water goes astray;

    O heart, every man is hostage to what he has earned.

    وَعَرَّضَ الدَهرُ شَطرَيهِ لِمَن حَلَبا

    The truth has become manifest, and its darkness has lifted;

    and Time has offered both halves of its udder to whoever milks.

    And one crouched beneath care, his ways of ascent blocked—

    I cleared confusion and doubts from his face,

    until he became Abbas's [unclear word in the supplied text], with no racing prize,

    following a hand that struck the veils away from his face.

    Woe to 'As! And it slipped past Abu Karib,

    as though what had happened had never been, once it was gone.

    I had designs against Yahya; then I was overtaken

    by my forbearance, and I held it back, red with flame.

    And Khalid has an offense that will yet catch up with him,

    when one day I speak on his account, as he has spoken.

    وَرُبَّما نالَهُ حِلمي وَقَد شَعَبا

    I may roast the ass by branding beneath its haunch;

    and sometimes my forbearance has reached him, though he has strayed.
