وَماand not أَناI بِالفانيdecrepit وَلاnor بِصَغيرِyoung
O Bahila, when my gray hairs appeared, I—
though neither decrepit nor young—
أَباهِلَO Bahila قَدindeed غَيَّبتُI withheld عَنكُمfrom you لِتَشكُرواso you may be grateful
وَماand not كُلُّevery مَولىrecipient of نِعمَةٍa favor بِشَكورِgrateful
O Bahila, held back from you, that you might be grateful.
And not every recipient of a favor is grateful.
بَنيsons of مُسلِمMuslim لَمdid not أَبغِهاI seek it فيamong سَراتِكُمyour nobles
فَبيتواso spend the night سُكوتاًsilent وَاِنعَمواand enjoy yourselves بِسُرورُin joy
Sons of Muslim, I did not aim it at your nobles;
so pass the night in silence, and live in joy.
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I فَغَّرتُهاI opened it wide لِابنِfor the son of كَشكَشٍKashkash
طُلوعاًrising up لِلَقّاطِagainst the gatherer of النَوىdate stones بِصَريرِwith a shriek
But I opened it wide for Ibn Kashkash,
rising against the date-stone gatherer with a shriek.
أَحينَis it when مَلَكتُI mastered الأَرضَthe earth شَرقاًeastward وَمَغرِباًand westward
وَأَسمَعتُand I made hear جِنَّthe jinn of الخافِقَينِboth horizons زَئيريmy roar
Is it when I have mastered the earth, east and west,
and made the jinn of both horizons hear my roar,
تَعَبَّثَtrifled بِيwith me زَيدُZayd الغَوِيُّthe misguided تَبيعُهاher follower
لَقَدsurely وَثِقَتshe trusted مِنfrom جَمرَتيmy ember بِفُتورِin cooling
that misguided Zayd, her follower, has trifled with me?
She has surely counted on the waning of my ember's heat.
أَناI النُصُبُthe idol المَحجوجُvisited by pilgrims كُلَّevery عَشِيَّةٍevening
أَميرٌa prince وَماand not أُعطيتُI was given عَهدَthe commission of أَميرِa prince
I am the idol visited by pilgrims every evening,
a prince, though I was given no prince's commission.
تَرَكتُI left عَلىupon اِبنِthe son of الكَسكَرِيِّal-Kaskari غَضاضَةًdisgrace
وَسَيَّرتُهُand I sent him traveling بِالشِعرِthrough verse شَرَّthe worst مَسيرِjourney
I left disgrace upon Ibn al-Kaskari,
and sent him, through verse, on the worst of journeys.
وَغادَرتُand I left يَحيىYahya وَالفَعيلَand the passive sodomite اِبنَson of سالِمٍSalim
عَلىin مَضَضٍanguish حينَwhen اِستَمَرَّgrew firm مَريريmy resolve
And I left Yahya and the passive sodomite, Ibn Salim,
in anguish, when my resolve grew firm.
وَقَدand indeed عَنَّappeared ليbefore me الخِنثىthe hermaphrodite فَقُلso say لِبَعوضَةًto a mosquito
سَقَطتِyou landed وَلَمand did not أَشعُرI notice وَطِرتِand you flew فَطيريso fly
And the hermaphrodite has appeared before me; say to a mosquito:
“You landed without my noticing, and flew off—so fly!”
وَعِنديand I have مَزيدٌmore لِاِمرئٍfor a man عَقَّwas undutiful to أُمَّهُhis mother
وَشَرَّعَand launched فيinto شَتميreviling me بِغَيرِwithout نَصيرِa defender
And I have more in store for a man who wronged his mother
and launched into reviling me without a defender.
دَعِleave الفَخرَboasting بِالغُرِّof the radiant ones الحِسانِbeautiful وُجوهُهاtheir faces
وَكُنand be كِخُلَيقٍlike Khulayq ماتَdied غَيرَnot فَخورِboastful
Give up boasting of the radiant ones with lovely faces,
and be like Khulayq, who died without boasting.
وَقَدand indeed صَهِلَتنيneighed at me مِنbecause of خَبيثِthe vileness of فِعالِكُمyour deeds
بَراذينُnags ماnot يَقضِمنَthey gnaw غَيرَother than أَيورِcocks
And, because of your vile deeds, I have been neighed at
by nags that gnaw on nothing but cocks.
فَقُلتُso I said مَعاذَI seek refuge in اللَهِGod لَستُI am not بِفاعِلٍone to do it
نَهانيhe forbade me أَميرُthe Commander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful أَميريmy commander
So I said, “God forbid! I will not do it;
the Commander of the Faithful, my commander, has forbidden me.”
