أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَنيyou see me وَيَحيىand Yahya قَدhad حَجَجناwe made the pilgrimage
وَكانَand was الحَجُّthe pilgrimage مِنamong خَيرِthe best of التِجارَهtrade
Did you not see that Yahya and I had made the pilgrimage?
Did you not see me and Yahya, we made the pilgrimage
And pilgrimage was among the best of trades.
And the pilgrimage was the best trade
خَرَجناwe set out طالِبَيboth seeking خَيرٍgoodness وَبِرٍّand piety
فَمالَthen turned بِناwith us الطَريقُthe road إِلىtoward زُرارَهZurara
We set out, both seeking goodness and piety,
We set out seeking goodness and righteousness
Then the road turned us toward Zurara.
But our path turned towards Zararah
فَعادَthen returned الناسُthe people قَدhad غَنِمواthey profited وَحَجّواand they made the pilgrimage
وَأُبناand we returned مُوَقَرَينَboth laden مِنَwith الخَسارَهloss
Then the people returned, having profited and made the pilgrimage,
The people returned, having profited and made the pilgrimage
And we returned, both laden with loss.
While we returned utterly destitute and in loss
