حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen بَعَثَbrought about الصَباحُdawn فِراقَناour parting
حَتّى إِذا بَعَثَ الصَباحُ فِراقَنا
وَرَأَينَand they saw مِنfrom وَجهِface الظَلامِthe darkness صُدوداa turning away
وَرَأَينَ مِن وَجهِ الظَلامِ صُدودا
When at last the morning summoned us to part,
Until, when dawn brought on our parting,
And they saw the young man’s face set on turning away,
And they saw the face of darkness turn away,
جَرَتِflowed الدُموعُthe tears وَقُلنَand they said فيكَin you جَلادَةٌfortitude
جَرَتِ الدُموعُ وَقُلنَ فيكَ جَلادَةٌ
عَنّاaway from us وَنَكرَهُand we dislike أَنthat تَكونَyou be جَليداsteadfast
عَنّا وَنَكرَهُ أَن تَكونَ جَليدا
Their tears streamed, and they said, “You have the fortitude
Tears flowed, and they said, “You have the fortitude
To part from us—and we hate that you are so steadfast.”
To bear parting from us—and we dislike your being so steadfast.”
