لَقَدindeed زادَنيhas increased in me ماwhat تَعلَمينَyou know صَبابَةًardent longing
إِلَيكِfor you فَلِلقَلبِso the heart has الحَزينِsorrowful وَجيبُa throbbing
What you know has indeed increased my longing
for you; the sorrowful heart throbs.
وَماand never تُذكَرينَyou are mentioned الدَهرَever إِلّاbut تَهَلَّلَتwell up
لِعَينَيَّin my two eyes مِنfrom شَوقٍlonging إِلَيكِfor you غُروبُstreams of tears
And whenever you are mentioned, there well up
in my eyes, from longing for you, streams of tears.
أَبيتُI spend the night وَعَينيand my eye بِالدُموعِby tears رَهينَةٌheld captive
وَأُصبِحُand I reach morning صَبّاًlovesick وَالفُؤادُand the heart كَئيبُdespondent
I spend the night with my eye held captive by tears,
and greet the morning lovesick, my heart despondent.
إِذاwhen نَطَقَspeaks القَومُthe company الجُلوسُseated فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I
أُكِبُّI hang my head كَأَنّيas though I مِنthrough هَواكِlove for you غَريبُa stranger
When the seated company speaks, I
hang my head, as though love of you had made me a stranger.
يَقولونَthey say داءُthe ailment of القَلبِthe heart جِنٌّa jinn أَصابَهُhas afflicted it
وَدائيbut my ailment غَزالٌa gazelle فيin الحِجالِcurtained chambers رَبيبُreared
They say the heart's ailment is a jinn that has struck it;
but my ailment is a gazelle reared in curtained chambers.
إِذاwhenever شِئتُI wish هاجَsurges الشَوقُlonging وَاِقتادَهُand leads it الهَوىpassion
إِلَيكِtoward you مِنَfrom الريحِthe wind الجَنوبِsouthern هُبوبُa gust
Whenever I wish, longing surges, and passion leads it
toward you with a gust of the south wind.
هَوىthe preference of صاحِبيmy companion ريحُthe wind الشَمالِof the north إِذاwhen جَرَتit blows
وَأَهوىbut I prefer لِقَلبِيَfor my heart أَنthat تَهُبَّshould blow جَنوبُa south wind
My companion loves the north wind when it blows,
but for my heart's sake I long for the south wind to blow.
وَماand not ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept أَنَّهاthat it حينَwhen تَنتَهيit reaches its end
تَناهىit arrives وَفيهاand in it مِنfrom عُبَيدَةَʿUbayda طيبُfragrance
And that is only because, when it reaches me,
it arrives bearing a fragrance from ʿUbayda.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لِمُستَشفيsurely seek healing from عُبَيدَةَʿUbayda إِنَّهاindeed she
بِدائيfor my ailment وَإِنeven though كاتَمتُهُI conceal it لَطَبيبُis surely a physician
And indeed I seek healing from ʿUbayda, for she
is surely a healer of my illness, though I conceal it.
كَقارورَةِlike the flask العَطّارِof the perfumer أَوor زادَsurpasses نَعتُهاher qualities
تَلينُshe softens إِذاwhen عاتَبتُهاI reproach her وَتَطيبُand grows fragrant
Like a perfumer's flask—or her qualities surpass it—
she softens when I reproach her, and grows fragrant.
لَقَدindeed شَغَلَتhas occupied قَلبيmy heart عُبَيدَةُʿUbayda فيin الهَوىlove
فَلَيسَso there is no لِأُخرىfor another woman فيin الفُؤادِthe heart نَصيبُshare
ʿUbayda has indeed occupied my heart with love,
so no other woman has a share in my heart.
أَلاwill ... not? تَتَّقينَyou fear اللَهَGod فيin قَتلِkilling عاشِقٍa lover
لَهُhe has حينَwhen يُمسيhe reaches evening زَفرَةٌa sigh وَنَحيبُand sobbing
Will you not fear God in killing a lover
who, when evening comes, sighs and sobs?
يُقَطِّعُhe severs مِنfrom أَهلِthe people of القَرابَةِkinship وُدَّهُhis affection
فَلَيسَso there is no لَهُfor him إِلّاexcept هَواكِlove for you نَسيبُkinsman
He cuts off his affection for his kin,
so he has no kinsman but his love for you.
تُمَنّينَنيyou promise me حُسنَgood القَضاءِrepayment بَعيدَةًwhile far away
وَتَلوينَنيand you delay paying me دَينيmy due وَأَنتِwhile you قَريبُare near
When far away, you promise me fair repayment,
yet when you are near, you put off paying my due.
فَواللَهِso, by God ماnot أَدريI know أَتَجحَدُdoes she deny حُبَّناour love
عُبَيدَةُʿUbayda أَمor تَجزيshe requites بِهِfor it فَتُثيبُand so rewards
So, by God, I do not know whether our love is denied
by ʿUbayda, or whether she requites and rewards it.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَشقىam surely the most wretched of الناسِpeople إِنif كانَis حُبُّهاlove for her
خَصيباًfertile وَمُرتادُwhile the sought-out الجِنابِgrounds جَديبُare barren
And I am surely the most wretched of men, if love for her
is fertile, while the pasture I seek is barren.
وَقائِلَةٍand a woman saying إِنif مِنتَyou have lied فيin طَلَبِpursuit of الصِبىyouthful passion
فَلاthen no بُدَّescape أَنthat تُحصىbe counted عَلَيكَagainst you ذُنوبُsins
And a woman said, ‘If you have lied in pursuit of youthful passion,
sins must inevitably be counted against you.
فَرُمso seek تَوبَةًrepentance قَبلَbefore المَماتِdeath فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
أَخافُI fear عَلَيكَfor you اللَهَGod حينَwhen تَؤوبُyou return
So seek repentance before death, for I
fear God for you when you return.’
تَكَلَّفُshe undertakes إِرشاديguiding me وَقَدthough already شابَhas grayed مَفرِقيmy hair's parting
وَحَمَّلَنيand has burdened me أَهليmy family فَلَيسَso there is no أَريبُwise man
She undertakes to guide me, though my hair's parting has grayed,
and my family has burdened me; there is no wise man.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her لَمdid not أَجنِI commit فيin الحُبِّlove بَينَناbetween us
أَثاماًsin عَلىagainst نَفسٍa soul فَمِمَّso of what أَتوبُdo I repent
So I told her, ‘In the love between us I have not committed
a sin against a soul; of what, then, should I repent?’
أَراناI see us قَريباًnear one another فيin الجِواءِal-Jiwāʾ وَنَلتَقيand we meet
مِراراًrepeatedly وَلاyet not نَخلوare we alone together وَذاكَand that عَجيبُis strange
I see us near one another in al-Jiwāʾ, and we meet
often, yet are never alone together—that is strange.
أَلاah لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether أَزورُكِI visit you مَرَّةًonce
وَلَيسَand there is no عَلَيناover us ياO عُبَيدُʿUbayd رَقيبُwatcher
Ah, would that I knew: shall I visit you once,
with no watcher over us, O ʿUbayd,
فَنَشفيso we may heal فُؤادَيناour two hearts مِنَof الشَوقِlonging وَالهَوىand passion
فَإِنَّfor indeed الَّذيthe one who يَشفيheals المُحِبَّthe lover حَبيبُa beloved
so we may heal our two hearts of longing and passion?
For the lover's healer is the beloved.
وَماand whatever أَنسَI forget مِمّاof what أَحدَثَhas brought الدَهرُtime لِلفَتىupon a young man
وَأَيّامُهُand its days اللاتيwhich عَلَيهِupon him تَنوبُcome in turn
And whatever I may forget of what time has brought upon a young man,
and its days that beset him in turn,
فَلَستُthen I am not بِناسٍforgetful مِنof رُضابِكِyour saliva مَشرَباًa draught
وَقَدwhen already حانَhad come مِنof شَمسِthe sun النَهارِof day غُروبُthe setting
I shall not forget a draught of your saliva,
when the day's sun had come to its setting.
فَبِتُّso I spent the night لَمّاwhen زَوَّدتِنيyou had provisioned me وَكَأَنَّنيand as though I
مِنَof الأَهلِfamily وَالمالِand wealth التِّلادِlong-held حَريبُbereft
So, when you had provisioned me, I spent the night as though
robbed of family and long-held wealth.
إِذاwhenever قُلتُI say يُنسينيكِwill make me forget you تَغميضُclosing the eyes ساعَةٍan hour
تَعَرَّضُarise أَهوالٌterrors لَكُمfor you all وَكُروبُand sorrows
Whenever I say, ‘An hour's shut-eye will make me forget you,’
terrors and sorrows on your account rise before me.
