أَلاAh! حَيِّgreet ذاthat البَيتَthe house الَّذيwhich لَستُI am not ناظِراًlooking
إِلىupon أَهلِهِits people إِلّاexcept that بَكَيتُI wept إِلىto صَحبيmy companions
Ah, greet that house: never do I gaze
Upon its people without weeping to my companions.
أَزورُI visit سِواهُelsewhere وَالهَوىwhile love عِندَwith أَهلِهِits people
إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle اِستَخَفَّتنيunsettle me تَباريحُfierce pangs مِنof حُبّيmy love
I visit elsewhere, though my love stays with its people,
Whenever the fierce pangs of my love unsettle me.
وَإِنand if نالَtakes its toll مِنّيon me الشَوقُlonging واجَهتُI face بابَهاher door
بِإِنسانِwith the pupil of عَينٍan eye ماnever يُفيقُfinds respite مِنَfrom السَكبِstreaming tears
And if longing takes its toll on me, I face her door
With an eye whose pupil never rests from streaming tears,
كَماas يَنظُرُgazes الصاديthe thirsty man أَطالَlingered long بِمَنهَلٍat a watering place
فَحَلَّأَهُthen drove him away الوُرّادُthose coming for water عَنfrom بارِدٍcool water عَذبِsweet
As a thirsty man gazes, lingering at a watering place,
Only to be driven by the water-seekers from water cool and sweet.
تَصُدُّshe turns away إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle الناسُthe people كانَتwere عُيونُهُمtheir eyes
عَلَيناupon us وَكُنّاand we were لِلمُشيرينَfor those pointing us out كَالنَصبِlike a target
She turns away whenever people's eyes are
Upon us, and we are like a target for those who point us out,

With something of our talk concealed deep within our hearts,
For fear that the woman next door might spread tales of us.
يُفَنِّدُنيrebukes me عَبدُAbd (servant of) العَزيزِal-Aziz (the Mighty) بِأَنَّنيbecause I
صَبَوتُI fell in love إِلىwith الذَلفاءِal-Dhalfa حينَwhen صَباتِربيmy peer fell in love
Abd al-Aziz rebukes me because I
Fell in love with al-Dhalfa when my peer fell in love.
وَماand what ذَنبُfault مَقدورٍone fated عَلَيهِfor him شَقاؤُهُhis misery
مِنَfrom الحُبِّlove عِندَwith اللَهِGod فيin سابِقِthe earliest الكُتبِrecords
What blame has one whose misery is decreed—
Misery from love—by God in the records of old?
لَقَدindeed أُعجِبَتwas captivated نَفسيmy soul بِهاby her فَتَبَدَّلَتand so it changed
فَياso alas for جَهدَthe anguish of نَفسيmy soul قادَهاled it لِلشَقاto misery عُجبيmy infatuation
My soul was indeed captivated by her, and so it changed;
Alas for my soul's anguish! My infatuation led it to misery.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَخشىtruly fear أَنthat تَقودَmay bring مَنِيَّتيmy death
مَوَدَّتُهاlove for her وَالخَطبُand calamity يَنميgrows إِلىinto الخَطبِcalamity
And truly I fear that my death may be brought on
By love for her; one calamity grows into another.
إِذاwhenever قُلتُI say يَصفوbecomes clear مِنfrom عُبَيدَةَUbayda مَشرَبٌa draught
لِحَرّانَfor a parched man صادٍthirsty كَدَّرَتshe muddied فيon غَدٍthe next day شِربيmy drink
Whenever I say a draught from Ubayda will be clear
For a parched, thirsty man, she muddies my drink the next day.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was ذاpossessed of لُبٍّa mind صَحيحٍsound فَأَصبَحَتand now she has
عُبَيدَةُUbayda بِالهِجرانِby abandonment قَدalready أَمرَضَتsickened لُبّيmy mind
I once possessed a sound mind, but now
Ubayda has sickened my mind by forsaking me.
وَلَستُand I am not بِأَحياlonger-lived مِنthan جَميلِJamil اِبنِson of مُعَمَرِMa'mar
وَعُروَةَand Urwa إِنif لَمnot يَشفِheals مِنof حُبِّهاlove for her رَبّيmy Lord
Nor shall I live longer than Jamil ibn Ma'mar
And Urwa, unless my Lord heals me of love for her.
تَعُدُّshe considers قَليلاًlittle ماwhat لَقيتُI suffered مِنَof الهَوىpassion
وَحَسبيand enough for me بِماwith what لاقيتُI have suffered مِنof حُبِّهاlove for her حَسبيenough for me
She counts as little what I have suffered from passion;
And what I have suffered from loving her is enough—enough for me!
إِذاwhenever عَلِمَتshe learns شَوقيmy longing إِلَيهاfor her تَثاقَلَتshe holds back
تَثاقُلَwith the reluctance of أُخرىanother woman بانَparted مِنfrom شِعبِهاher valley شِعبيmy valley
Whenever she learns of my longing for her, she holds back,
With the reluctance of another woman whose valley lies apart from mine.
فَلَوso if كانَthere were ليon my part ذَنبٌa wrong إِلَيهاagainst her عَذَرتُهاI would excuse her
بِهَجريfor forsaking me وَلَكِنbut قَلَّwas small فيin حُبِّهاlove for her ذَنبيmy fault
For if I had wronged her, I would have excused her
For forsaking me; but my fault in loving her is small.
وَقَدand indeed مَنَعَتshe withheld مِنّيfrom me زِيارَتَهاvisiting her الَّتيwhich
إِذاwhenever كَرُبَتgrew distressed نَفسيmy soul شَفَيتُI healed بِهاthrough it كَربيmy anguish
And she has denied me the visit to her
With which I healed my anguish whenever my soul grew distressed.
فَأَصبَحتُso I became مُشتاقاًfilled with longing أُكَفكِفُI wipe away عَبرَةًa tear
كَذيlike one deserving of العَتبِreproach مَهجوراًforsaken وَلَيسَand he is not بِذيone deserving of عَتبِreproach
So I am left yearning, wiping away a tear,
Forsaken like one deserving reproach, though he deserves none.
كَأَنَّas though فُؤاديmy heart حينَwhen يَذكُرَrecalls بَينَهاparting from her
مَريضٌsick وَماand there is no بِيin me مِنany سَقامٍillness وَلاnor طَبِّsorcery
As though my heart, when it remembers parting from her,
Were sick, though no illness or spell afflicts me.
أُحاذِرُI fear بُعدَthe distance of الدارِthe dwelling وَالقُربُyet nearness شاعِفٌheart-scorching
فَلاso not أَناI مَغبوطٌenvied بِبُعدٍin distance وَلاnor قُربِnearness
I fear her dwelling's distance, yet nearness burns my heart;
So neither far nor near am I to be envied.
