By the life of her noble visitors’ father, they

Surely enjoy the sight of her and the sweetness of her song.

Our ears and our eyes pray to her

Whenever we meet, with our hearts calling.

And a golden-skinned woman, like a bamboo cane, has never lived

In hardship, nor ridden a shepherd’s mount.

Hidden pearls flowed over her tongue

For her visitors, from a lute and a reed flute.

When her fingertips play the lute, she shakes

Hearts that a caller has summoned to passionate longing.

As though they were in a paradise, where have come together

Its beauties of meadow and hill.

They go away, from her birdsong and her talk,

Drunk, though she gives them no drink from a cup.

She toys with the minds of men, yet even if she draws near,

Piety is obeyed, and waywardness is not.
