لَقَدindeed عَشِقَتfell in love أُذنيmy ear كَلاماًspeech سَمِعتُهُI heard it
رَخيماًsoft and melodious وَقَلبيand my heart لِلمَليحَةِwith the beautiful woman أَعشَقُmore enamored
My ear has indeed fallen in love with words I heard,
soft and melodious; and my heart loves the beautiful woman even more.
وَلَوand had عايَنوهاthey seen her لَمnot يَلومواblame عَلىfor البُكاweeping
كَريماًa noble man سَقاهُgave him to drink الخَمرَwine بَدرٌa full moon مُحلِّقُsoaring
And had they seen her, they would not have blamed him for weeping—
a noble man whom a soaring full moon had served wine.
وَكَيفَand how تَناسيtrying to forget مَنone who كَأَنَّas though حَديثَهُhis speech
بِأُذنيin my ear وَإِنand even if غُيِّبتُI am kept away قُرطٌan earring مُعَلَّقُhanging
And how could I try to forget one whose speech is like
an earring hanging in my ear, even if I am kept away?
