أَلاAh! راعَهُstartled him صَوتُthe voice الأَذينِof the muezzin وَماthough he had not هَجَدslept
وَماand not ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept ذِكرُremembrance مَنone ذِكرُهُremembering him كَمَدanguish
Ah, the muezzin's voice startled him, though he had not slept.
And that was only remembrance of one whose memory is anguish.
أَلانَتshe softened لَناfor us يَومَthe day اِلتَقَيناwe met حَديثَهاher speech
أَمانِيَّhopes وَعدٍof a promise ثُمَّthen زاغَتshe swerved بِماfrom what تَعِدshe promises
She softened her speech for us the day we met,
With hopes of a promise; then she swerved from what she promised.
وَماand not كانَit was إِلّاexcept لَهوَa diversion يَومٍof a day سَرَقتُهُI stole it
إِلىtoward فاتِرِlanguid العَينَينِin both eyes مِنon دونِهِthis side of him الأَسَدthe lion
And it was only a day's diversion that I stole,
To reach a languid-eyed one, with the lion barring the way.
تَراءَتshe appeared لَناto us فيin السابِرِيِّfine Sābirī cloth وَفيand in الحَناhenna
ثَقيلَةَheavy دِعصِthe sand dune الرِدفِof the rump مَهضومَةَslender الكَبِدthe midriff
She appeared to us in fine Sābirī cloth and henna,
Her rump a heavy sand dune, her waist slender.
كَأَنَّas though عَلَيهاupon her رَوضَةًa garden يَومَthe day وَدَّعَتshe bade farewell
بِأَقوالِهاwith her words خَوفاًin fear وَراحَتand she departed وَلَمand did not تَعُدreturn
As though she wore a garden on the day she bade farewell,
With her words, in fear; she departed and did not return.
فَلَمّاso when رَأَيتُI saw المالِكِيَّةَal-Mālikiyya أَعرَضَتshe turned away
صُدوداًin aversion وَحُفَّتand she was surrounded بِالعُيونِby watchful eyes وَبِالرَصَدand by sentries
So when I saw al-Mālikiyya turn away,
In aversion, surrounded by watchful eyes and sentries,
صَرَفتُI turned away الهَوىlove عَنّيfrom me وَلَيسَyet it is not بِبارِحٍdeparting
عَلىupon كَبِديmy liver ماas long as رَقَّfelt tenderness لِلوالِدِtoward the father الوَلَدthe child
I turned love away from me, yet it remains
Upon my liver, as long as a child feels tenderness for its father.
لَقَدindeed كُنتُI was أَرجوهاhoping for her وَكانَتand she was قَريبَةًnear
بِأَقوالِهاwith her words تَدنوshe draws near الوُرودَcoming to water وَلاand does not تَرِدcome to water
Indeed, I hoped for her, and she was near
In her words: she nears the water, yet never comes to it.
فَماso what بالُهاails her ياO بَكرُBakr راحَتshe went مَعَwith العِدىthe foes
عَلىagainst عاشِقٍa lover لَمdid not يَجنِcommit ذَنباًan offense وَلَمnor يَكَدcome close
So what ails her, O Bakr, that she has joined the foes
Against a lover who did no wrong, nor even came close?
أَمالَتshe turned aside صَفاءَthe purity الوُدِّof affection مَنshe who حيلَa barrier was placed دونَهاbefore her
فَياso, alas حَزَنيmy sorrow لاnot نَلتَقيwe shall meet آخِرَto the end الأَبَدof eternity
She who was kept out of reach has turned pure affection aside;
Alas for my sorrow! We shall not meet for all eternity.
كَأَنَّas though فُؤاديmy heart فيamong خَوافيthe inner wing-feathers حَمامَةٍof a dove
مِنَfrom الشَوقِlonging أَوor صُنعِthe work النَوافِثِof women who blow فيupon العُقَدthe knots
As though my heart were among a dove's inner wing-feathers,
From longing, or the work of women who blow upon knots.
وَقَدand indeed لامَنيhe reproached me فيهاover her المُعَلّىal-Muʿallā وَلَوyet if بَداthere appeared
لَهُto him ماwhat بَداappeared ليto me مِنof مَحاسِنِهاher beauties سَجَدhe would have prostrated himself
And al-Muʿallā reproached me over her; yet had there appeared
To him what I saw of her charms, he would have prostrated himself.
