Bid Ubayda farewell, for parting has drawn near.

And do you see any wisdom in departing without her?

So do not begrudge a greeting to a man—

no one feels as much as he has felt.

Give a pledge to a lover who, if he could reach you,

O ʿAbd, would greet you before parting, or give a pledge.

And I do not know, when your dwelling lies far away,

whether a dwelling will bring us together, or we shall never meet again.

Ubayda withheld a greeting and hid herself away,

so she stirred an eye's tears that had frozen.

So I said, when my eye testified to my love for you,

and I found no refuge from talk of you:

A thing may elude a man of sense, yet be attained

by one in whom you see neither sense nor endurance.

People cannot keep far off what fate brings near,

nor can anything bring it near when it is far away.

    وَهَل يُلامُ عَلى التَقصيرِ مَن جَهِدا

    I fell short, after striving, in my devotion to her;

and can one who has exhausted himself be blamed for falling short?

What do you decree for one with a sleepless eye?

If you wish, he dies; and if you make him immortal, he lives forever.

A flawed way out may trap the one who takes it,

and an evil tongue may assail even one who sits still.

The dark-eyed beauty kept clutching her heart,

because of a departing man who stirred her entrails and liver.
