عُبَيدَةُUbayda أَطلِقيloosen عَنّيfrom me صِفاديmy fetters
وَلاand do not تَعديassail عَلَيَّagainst me مَعَwith الأَعاديthe enemies
Ubayda, release me from my fetters,
and do not turn against me alongside my enemies.
وَمَنand whoever يَكُmay be فيin الهَوىlove جَلداًhardy فَإِنّيbut I am
رَقيقُtender القَلبِof heart لَستُI am not مِنَamong الجِلادِthe hardy
Others may be hardy in love, but I
am tender-hearted, not among the hardy.
كَأَنّيas though I were مِنfrom هَواكِlove of you أَخوa companion of فِراشٍa bed
يَفوقُgasps بِنَفسِهِwith his life-breath قَلِقُrestless الوِسادِthe pillow
From love of you, I am like a bedridden man,
breathing his last, restless on his pillow.
سَقاهُgave him to drink البابِلِيُّthe Babylonian بِراحَتَيهِwith his two palms
سِجالَbrimming buckets of المَوتِdeath فيamid عُقَدِthe knots of الوِدادِaffection
The Babylonian gave him to drink, with both his palms,
brimming buckets of death amid the knots of love.
وَغامِطَةٍand a woman who scorns لِفَقدِكَregarding your absence فيin التَدانيcloseness
تُسائِلُshe asks كَيفَhow أَنتَyou are عَلىin البِعادِseparation
And a woman who slighted your absence when near
asks how you fare now you are far away.
فَقُلتُso I said بِفَقدِهاthrough losing her حارَبتُI fought نَوميmy sleep
وَحارَبتُand I fought التَيَقُّظَwakefulness بِاِفتِقاديthrough my sense of loss
I said: Through losing her I battled my sleep,
and through my longing, battled wakefulness.
تَنامُshe sleeps وَلاand not أَنامُI sleep كَأَنَّas though عَينيmy eye
لِمُقلَةِto the pupil of عَينِهاher eye وَهَبَتgave رُقاديmy slumber
She sleeps while I do not, as though my eye
had given my slumber to the pupil of her eye.
فَنامَتso it slept عَينُهاher eye وَجَنَتand gathered لِعَينيfor my eye
بِماin return for what وَهَبَتit gave لَهاto her شَوكَthorns of القَتادِthe qatad bush
Then her eye slept, and gathered for mine,
in return for what mine gave hers, thorns of the qatad bush.
فَكونيso be حُرَّةًnoble فيin حِفظِguarding عَينيmy eye
هَداكَmay he guide you لِقِبلَةِtoward the prayer-direction of المَعروفِkindness هادِa guide
So be noble in guarding my eye;
may a guide lead you toward the qibla of kindness.
لَعَلَّكِperhaps you تَسمَعينَwill hear غَداًtomorrow مَقاليmy words
بِحَيثُwhere صَباyearned الفُؤادُthe heart إِلىfor سُعادِSuad
Perhaps tomorrow you will hear my words,
where the heart yearned for Suad.
أَقولُI say لِمُثبَتٍto one held fast وَبِهِand within it حَراكٌmovement
يَهِمُّit yearns وَلاbut not يُسَمَّحُis permitted بِاِنقِيادِto yield
I say to one held fast, though it still stirs,
that yearns, yet is not permitted to yield:
أَبَعدَis it after عُبَيدَةَUbayda الحَوراءِthe dark-eyed تَصبوyou yearn
إِلىfor أُنثىa woman فَقَدتُكَmay I lose you مِنas a فُؤادِheart
After Ubayda, the dark-eyed, do you yearn
for another woman? May I lose you, O heart!
فَراجَعَso it returned بِاِسمِهاat her name طَرِباًenraptured إِلَيهاto her
وَكانَتand it was زَلَّةًa slip غَيرَnot اِعتِمادِdeliberate intent
So at her name it returned to her in rapture,
and it was a slip, not a deliberate act.
وَماand not إِنat all تَطرَبينَyou thrill إِلىto المُناديthe caller
بِعَبدَةَof Abda فَاِستَطَرتُso I flew إِلىtoward المُناديthe caller
And you do not thrill at all to the caller
of Abda; then I flew toward the caller,
بِأَوَّلِwith the first مُمسِكٍone grasping بِذِنابِby the tail of غَيٍّيmy folly
عَدانيturned me away الغَيُّfolly عَنfrom سُبُلِthe paths of الرَشادِright guidance
with the first to grasp the tail of my folly;
folly turned me from the paths of right guidance.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends اِتِّئادُكُماyour forbearance, you two بِعُذرٍwith justification
وَلَومُكُماand your blame, you two أَخاًa brother غَيرُnot اِتِّئادِforbearance
My two friends, your forbearance is justified;
but your blaming a brother is no forbearance.
دَعاleave off, you two لَومَblaming المُحِبِّthe lover إِذاwhen تَمادىhe persists
فَماfor ... is not لَومُblaming المُحِبِّthe lover مِنَpart of السَدادِsound judgment
Leave off blaming the lover when he persists,
for blaming a lover is not sound judgment.
لَعَلَّكُماperhaps you two عَلىtoward اللَوماءِreproach فيهاconcerning her
تَحُثُّكُماurges you both الطَماعَةُeager hope بِاِرتِدادِof turning back
Perhaps, in reproaching me over her,
you two are driven by the hope that I will turn back.
فَلَستُbut I am not بِراجِعٍone who turns back ماas long as حَنَّyearns إِلفٌa lover
وَماand as long as هَتَفَcalls الحَمامُthe doves بِبَطنِin the bed of وادِa valley
But I shall not turn back as long as a lover yearns,
and as long as doves call in a valley's bed.
وَأُقسِمُand I swear فَاِقصِداso be moderate, you two أَوor عَذِّبانيtorment me, you two
بِطولِwith prolonged مَلامَةٍreproach غَيرَwithout اِقتِصادِrestraint
And I swear—be measured, you two, or torment me
with prolonged reproach, without restraint—
لَوَif اَنَّthat الغانِياتِthe beautiful women مَلَكنَpossessed قَلبيmy heart
لَكانَthen would be مَحَلُّthe place of عَبدَةَAbda فيin السَوادِthe dark core
if beautiful women possessed my heart,
Abda's place would be within its dark core.
كَأَنّيas though I were يَومَthe day شَيَّعَنيsaw me off صِحابيmy companions
فَرُحتُso I departed وَلَمand did not أُنِخmake my camel kneel مِنهاof hers بِواديin a valley
It was as though, the day my companions saw me off
and I left, without having made my camel kneel in a valley of hers,
أَسيرٌa captive مُسلَمٌhanded over بِدِماءِfor the blood of قَومٍa people
إِلىto ذيone with غُلَّةٍburning thirst حَرّانَfevered صاديparched
I were a captive handed over for a people's blood
to one burning with thirst, fevered and parched.
تَواكَلَهاleft it to one another الأَباعِدُthe distant kin فيin يَدَيهِhis two hands
وَلَيسَand there is no لَهُfor him مِنَamong الأَدنَينَthe nearest kin فاديransomer
Distant kin left it to one another, in his hands;
and he has no ransomer among his nearest kin.
